TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach held a press conference to discuss a recent shark bite treatment involving 24-year-old Marlin Wakeman from Stuart, Florida.

Wakeman recounted being bitten two weeks ago while working on a boat at Flying Fish Marina in Long Island, Bahamas. While on the job, he accidentally slipped into the water, and a Caribbean reef shark bit his leg and kneecap area. A second shark attempted to bite him on the shoulder but missed.

Despite the initial shock and pain, Wakeman managed to pull himself back onto the boat, where the captain and crew administered first aid before taking him to a nearby clinic. Wakeman said he passed out from the intense pain.

"I knew I was in trouble the moment I slipped into the water," Wakeman admitted. "I just hoped I could get back on the boat quickly."

After being stabilized, Wakeman was flown back to Florida for further treatment. He emphasized the importance of staying calm in the face of danger and shared his advice regarding shark encounters: "Don't be scared. Keep in mind they are apex predators, and you don't want to end up in their mouth."

St. Mary’s Medical Center confirmed that Wakeman has been discharged and will attend a follow-up appointment after the press conference. He expressed gratitude to the medical team and the crew for their swift and effective response, which helped minimize the damage. Despite the ordeal, Wakeman maintains a positive attitude and is grateful for the support he received.
