Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) before his second birthday, Christopher's journey began early:

"He seemed content, calm, and curious about the world," recalls his father, Joshua. Supported by his dedicated medical team at Phoenix Children's Hospital, six-year-old Christopher Pantier defies the odds with every determined step he takes. Backed by his own fortitude, unwavering parental love, and the expert care provided at Phoenix Children's, Christopher is charting a course towards triumph, advancing steadily one step at a time.

Around his first birthday, Christopher's parents noticed he lagged behind in walking milestones typical for his age group:

"He could navigate toys and shuffle along furniture," explains Christopher's mother, Ashley. "But he couldn't stand unsupported. When he started physical therapy, he relied more on his arms to support his legs, rather than his legs doing the work." Initially, the path seemed daunting for Ashley, especially upon learning of the diagnosis. However, they found solace and expertise at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

"The neurologist was highly knowledgeable about SMA," Ashley notes. "They promptly initiated a treatment plan released just a year prior to Christopher's diagnosis. He commenced treatment at PCH when he was 21 months old." Now nearing his seventh birthday, Christopher has acclimatized to life with SMA, not merely surviving but thriving. Through consistent treatments, participation in a clinical trial at PCH, and bi-weekly physical therapy sessions, he is showcasing his indomitable spirit to all.

Christopher's younger sister received an early SMA diagnosis, thanks to Christopher's journey serving as a guiding light:

Screening her promptly, she commenced treatment as a newborn. Joshua and Ashley express gratitude for Christopher's journey, which paved the way for her and countless other families, referring to him as her "guardian angel." Christopher's story serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating the power of perseverance, love, and cutting-edge medical care in overcoming adversity.

"Having access to a hospital that stays abreast of cutting-edge medical advancements has been invaluable," Ashley emphasizes. Beyond medical interventions, Christopher finds joy in the innovative approaches of the Child Life team at PCH. "When you face medical procedures, you retreat into a tent where the 'iPad Lady' entertains you with games," Christopher shares. "Typically, hospitals evoke fear or apprehension, but PCH's offerings make it an inviting place for children," adds Ashley. "Initially, we never fathomed needing a hospital like PCH, but upon experiencing their excellence, we can't envision life without them," Joshua reflects. Now, Christopher relishes in activities typical of boys his age – soccer, playing with cars, and cruising on his electric bike. As he continues to defy expectations, Christopher reminds us all that with courage and support, anything is possible
