'American Idol' singer Mandisa died of class III obesity complications, autopsy reveals

Grammy-award-winning gospel singer Mandisa passed away due to complications from class III obesity, according to her autopsy report. Mandisa, who gained widespread recognition on season five of “American Idol,” was discovered deceased in her home in Franklin, near Nashville, Tennessee, on April 18. She was 47 years old.

The cause of death was determined to be natural, as confirmed by the Nashville medical examiner’s office to NBC News on Wednesday. Class III obesity, as defined by The Cleveland Clinic, is characterized by a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher accompanied by obesity-related health conditions. This level of obesity can lead to severe health issues, including Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Mandisa, whose full name was Mandisa Lynn Hundley, hailed from California. She began her musical journey by singing in church and later pursued vocal performance studies at American River College in California and Fisk University in Nashville, according to her record label's artist biography. Mandisa’s early career involved working as a backup vocalist for various artists before she auditioned for “American Idol,” where she finished in ninth place.

Her talent and dedication to gospel music earned her a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014 for her album “Overcomer.” Throughout her career, Mandisa was open about her health and weight journey, discussing her struggles and triumphs publicly.

In 2017, Mandisa shared her personal battle with deep depression during an interview on “Good Morning America.” She revealed that in 2014, following the death of a close friend, she experienced profound emotional turmoil that led her to consider suicide. During this period, she turned to emotional eating and isolated herself from others.

“(Emotional eating) is what I have done my entire life,” she explained. “After losing over 120 pounds, which I talked about my first time here, I gained it all back and 75 more. I sunk into the deepest depression of my life after Kisha died.”

Mandisa credited her friends with intervening during her darkest moments, helping her seek the assistance she needed to begin her recovery. Her openness about her mental health struggles and weight issues resonated with many fans, making her an influential figure beyond her music career.

Her passing has left a significant void in the gospel music community and among her fans worldwide. Mandisa’s journey from a church singer in California to a celebrated gospel artist highlights her remarkable talent and enduring spirit. Despite her struggles, she remained a beacon of hope and inspiration for many, using her platform to encourage others facing similar challenges.

Mandisa's influence extended beyond her musical achievements. She was a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, sharing her story to help others understand the importance of seeking help and support. Her legacy is one of resilience, faith, and the power of music to heal and uplift.

Her untimely death underscores the serious health risks associated with class III obesity and the importance of addressing these health issues with compassion and understanding. As fans and fellow musicians mourn her loss, they also celebrate the indelible impact she made through her music and advocacy.

Mandisa’s journey also reflects broader themes of perseverance and the transformative power of faith. Her album “Overcomer” not only brought her critical acclaim but also resonated deeply with listeners, many of whom found solace and strength in her music during their own personal struggles. The title track, “Overcomer,” became an anthem for those facing adversity, illustrating Mandisa’s ability to connect with her audience on a profound emotional level.

In addition to her Grammy win, Mandisa received multiple Dove Awards, which honor outstanding achievements in Christian music. Her contributions to the genre have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire future generations of gospel artists. Mandisa’s story is a testament to the impact one individual can have through the arts, not just in terms of entertainment, but in providing a voice for those who are struggling and offering hope and encouragement.

The gospel music community, along with her devoted fan base, will remember Mandisa for her exceptional talent, her candidness about her personal battles, and her unwavering faith. Her music and message will continue to live on, offering comfort and inspiration to those who need it most.
