Apple Debuts iPad Pro with Groundbreaking M4 Chip, Previews AI Tools
Apple has launched its latest iPad Pro, powered by the newly developed M4 processor, representing a significant leap in performance, with speeds up to four times faster than current iPad Pro models. Apple CEO Tim Cook hailed the M4 as "an incredibly powerful chip for AI." This groundbreaking processor surpasses the M3 chip that currently powers Apple's MacBook series.
In June, at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple is set to reveal its first suite of AI tools for the iPhone and iPad.
The new iPad Pro will be available in two sizes: 11 inches and 13 inches. The 11-inch model, which is only 5.1 mm thick and weighs less than a pound, is the thinnest iPad Pro yet. It features a display enhanced with two OLED panels for superior brightness and comes in silver and space black.
Apple's latest iPad Air will also be available in 11-inch ($599) and 13-inch ($799) sizes. The 13-inch version, which is influenced by the iPad Pro, offers 30% more screen space than the 11-inch model. The iPad Air now incorporates the M2 processor, providing a faster GPU and neural engine that deliver a 50% speed boost over previous versions. It also supports AI-based software and includes a front-facing landscape camera.
Apple has also introduced an updated Apple Pencil ($129), now equipped with a new squeeze feature for tool selection, customizable drawing layers, and haptic feedback. It can also be easily located using the Find My feature.
Pre-orders for the new devices begin on Wednesday, and they will be available in stores next week.
These announcements come after Apple disclosed $5.6 billion in iPad revenue in the most recent quarter, representing a 17% decline year-over-year. Despite this, Apple anticipates significant growth in its iPad business for the June quarter.
In the first fiscal quarter, Apple reported total revenue of $90.8 billion, down 4% year-over-year, with a 10% decrease in iPhone sales. The company faces continued growth challenges in China due to economic uncertainties. Despite these challenges, Apple announced a $110 billion share buyback, its largest ever.
During the earnings call, Cook indicated the rollout of generative AI tools across Apple's products "in the weeks ahead," highlighting the company's unique capabilities. "We see generative AI as a key opportunity across our products and believe we have distinct advantages that will set us apart," he emphasized.
