TOWN CREEK, Ala. (WAFF/Gray News) – An 83-year-old man, Willard Norton, tragically lost his life after being attacked by two dogs on Sunday afternoon. This incident marks a heartbreaking loss for the community and highlights ongoing concerns about animal control in rural areas.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the attack occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Norton’s home. The two pit bulls involved in the attack are believed to have belonged to Norton’s neighbor. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Norton unresponsive near his front door. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his severe injuries.

The dogs were quickly captured and taken to the Lawrence County Animal Shelter by animal control employees. The Lawrence County coroner confirmed the dogs’ ownership and noted the severity of the injuries inflicted on Norton.

Norton’s family is in deep mourning following the incident. A family member described Norton as a cherished figure in the community, often referred to as the "watermelon man" because he sold watermelons locally and was passionate about his garden. “He was one of the best people I knew. He was what a man should be, and there was no one who didn’t like him,” said his grandson, expressing the family's profound grief and admiration for Norton.

The family also revealed that there had been previous issues with the same dogs roaming the neighborhood. Despite these concerns, deputies noted that there were no official reports filed about the dogs prior to this fatal incident. The family is now grappling with the loss and the unresolved issues regarding the dogs' previous behavior.

Cheryl Jones, director of the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter, highlighted significant gaps in animal control measures in Lawrence County. She explained that the county lacks both containment laws and dedicated animal control officers, which are critical in preventing such tragedies. “It has to happen in the county because that’s largely where you’re going to see the biggest at-large population because everyone has always said ‘Well, I live in the county, so I don’t have to keep my animals contained.’ But it’s just not safe to do anymore,” Jones stated.

Jones shared that in Lauderdale County, where she operates, there has been an increase in aggressive dog incidents, including those harming livestock. However, the presence of animal control officers helps manage and mitigate these risks. She stressed the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for proper containment of animals. “People need to ensure their animals are contained to their property, whether with an electric fence or a real fence,” she advised.
