Dallas and Fort Worth Zoos Adjust Hours Due to Summer Heat

In response to the intense summer heat, the Dallas Zoo and Fort Worth Zoo are adjusting their operating hours to protect guests, animals, and staff from prolonged exposure to dangerous temperatures. Both zoos will now open and close earlier to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for all.

The decision to modify the hours comes as North Texas experiences a particularly hot summer, with temperatures frequently soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The region has been under numerous heat advisories, and meteorologists have warned that the extreme temperatures pose significant health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. By opening earlier in the morning and closing earlier in the afternoon, the zoos aim to minimize the time visitors and staff spend in the hottest part of the day, while also ensuring that the animals are not subjected to extreme heat for extended periods.

Zoo officials have emphasized the importance of these changes for the well-being of the animals, many of which are particularly vulnerable to heat stress. Species such as penguins, polar bears, and other animals adapted to cooler climates require special attention during these scorching months. Adjusting the hours allows the animals to enjoy more comfortable conditions during the cooler parts of the day. In addition to altering the schedule, zookeepers have implemented various cooling measures for the animals, including misting systems, shaded areas, and ice treats to help them stay cool.

For the Dallas Zoo, the new operating hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the Fort Worth Zoo will operate from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. These new hours will be in effect throughout the summer months, likely extending into early fall if high temperatures persist. The changes are designed to ensure that visitors can still enjoy the zoo experience without compromising their health and safety. The early opening times allow families to visit during the cooler morning hours, making the experience more enjoyable for young children and elderly visitors who are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

Additionally, the adjusted hours provide a safer working environment for zoo staff, who spend significant time outdoors caring for the animals and maintaining the exhibits. By reducing the length of time they are exposed to the intense heat, the zoos aim to prevent heat-related illnesses among their employees. Staff members have been briefed on the importance of staying hydrated, taking regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion.

The new operating hours for both zoos will be in effect throughout the summer months. Visitors are encouraged to check the zoos' websites and social media pages for the latest updates on opening and closing times. The zoos have also taken steps to enhance the visitor experience during the summer by providing additional shaded seating areas, misting stations, and cooling zones throughout the parks. Water fountains and hydration stations are strategically placed to ensure that guests can easily stay hydrated during their visit.

By taking proactive measures to address the challenges posed by the summer heat, the Dallas Zoo and Fort Worth Zoo continue to demonstrate their dedication to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone who visits. The changes reflect a broader commitment to the health and safety of their animals, staff, and visitors, ensuring that all can continue to enjoy the educational and recreational opportunities that these beloved institutions offer.
