PHOENIX (AZFamily/13 News) — Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with the tragic shooting death of University of Arizona student Erin Jones, which occurred in April.

The Tucson Police Department announced the arrests of the following individuals:

- 18-year-old Estevan Garcia: Garcia was arrested on June 14 near Midvale Park and Drexel. He is among the four suspects charged with murder and drive-by shooting.

- 17-year-old Matthew Beale: Beale was taken into custody on June 17 near East Golf Links Road and South Pantano Road.

- 17-year-old Marcus Ian Williams: Williams was apprehended on June 17 in the 1800 block of West San Juan Trail.

- 17-year-old Akeem Alvarez: Alvarez was arrested on June 18 at a residence in the 13000 block of East Mesquite Flat Springs Drive.

The incident occurred on the night of April 28 at an off-campus house party. Jones was fatally shot, and three other individuals sustained injuries but survived. Security footage obtained by Arizona’s Family sister station, 13 News, captured the aftermath of the shooting, showing people running while gunshots rang out in the background.

According to Tucson Police, Erin Jones was not the intended target of the shooting. Instead, she was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire. The incident prompted an extensive response from law enforcement, with 20 detectives and supervisors from the homicide and aggravated assault units, as well as detectives from special investigations, converging on the scene.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm used in the shooting was also connected to a prior aggravated assault case. Tucson Police Chief praised the efforts of the TPD SWAT team and multiple Community Response Teams for their work in safely apprehending the four suspects.

Detectives believe that the suspects had driven to the party with the intention of targeting another group of individuals who were not University of Arizona students. The house where the party took place was rented by members of the university's football team, and several football players, along with other UA students, were present at the event.

Despite the chaotic scene, only 25 witnesses remained to be interviewed by police that morning. The Tucson Police Department has been diligently working to interview a total of 140 witnesses and neighbors, in addition to over 50 individuals who called 911 to report the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to seek information about other individuals involved in the incident. The Tucson Police Department extended its gratitude to the Pima County Attorney’s Office, specifically Major Crimes Bureau Chief Mark Hotchkiss, 88-Crime, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the University of Arizona Police Department for their assistance. Additionally, they thanked community members who came forward with information, helping to advance the investigation.

The Tucson community has been deeply affected by this tragic event, and there has been an outpouring of support for Erin Jones’ family and friends. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on bringing justice to the victims and their loved ones.
