Man Arrested for Stealing Diesel Fuel, Hitting HCSO Vehicle While Trying to Flee: Deputies

In a dramatic turn of events at a local Mobil gas station, a man was apprehended by deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) after he was caught attempting to steal diesel fuel. The incident escalated when the suspect tried to flee the scene, resulting in a collision with an HCSO vehicle.

The suspect, identified as Johnathan Ray Carter, 32, was reportedly in the act of siphoning diesel fuel from the gas station's underground tanks when deputies arrived at the scene around 2:30 AM on Wednesday. Authorities had been alerted to the suspicious activity by a vigilant employee who noticed Carter's unusual behavior and promptly contacted the sheriff's office. According to witnesses, Carter was seen using a modified van equipped with a large storage tank and sophisticated siphoning equipment.

Upon arrival, deputies attempted to apprehend Carter, who then jumped into his vehicle in a desperate bid to escape. Ignoring deputies' commands to stop, Carter accelerated, ramming into one of the deputies' vehicles and causing significant damage. The collision disabled Carter's vehicle, and he was apprehended after a brief struggle. Fortunately, no deputies were injured in the collision, though the damaged HCSO vehicle will require extensive repairs.

"The swift response of our deputies prevented what could have been a far more dangerous situation," said Sheriff Chad Chronister in a statement. "Our officers acted with professionalism and bravery, ensuring that the suspect was quickly taken into custody without further incident."

Carter, who has a prior criminal record including theft and drug-related charges, was arrested at the scene and now faces multiple charges, including theft of diesel fuel, criminal mischief, resisting arrest with violence, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. During the arrest, deputies discovered that Carter had managed to siphon approximately 500 gallons of diesel fuel, valued at over $2,000.

The HCSO vehicle involved in the collision has been taken out of service for repairs, and deputies have launched a broader investigation into whether Carter is connected to other recent fuel thefts in the area. Authorities believe Carter may be part of a larger network involved in the illegal fuel trade, given the specialized equipment found in his possession.

Local residents expressed shock and concern over the incident. Jane Doe, a nearby resident, commented, "It's scary to think that something like this can happen so close to home. I'm just glad the deputies are okay and that they caught the guy." The Mobil gas station has since resumed normal operations, though staff remain on high alert following the incident.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident or Carter's activities to come forward. Sheriff Chronister reassured the community of the HCSO's commitment to public safety. "We will not tolerate acts of theft or violence in our county. Our deputies will continue to work tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Hillsborough County," he stated.

This case highlights the importance of community vigilance and the critical role that timely reporting can play in preventing crime and ensuring swift justice. The HCSO continues to encourage residents to report any suspicious activities they witness, emphasizing that community cooperation is essential in maintaining public safety. As the investigation continues, more details about Carter's background and potential accomplices are expected to emerge, shedding light on the broader scope of his criminal activities.
