PHOENIX - While most people avoid the scorching heat, a group of dedicated runners were intentionally counting their laps around the Pima Canyon Trail on Saturday.

The fifth annual Circle of Hell Run took place for three hours, attracting dozens of participants who braved the intense Arizona heat for this unique and grueling event. Held during the hottest part of the day, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the run challenges even the most experienced athletes. Despite having plenty of support on the sidelines to keep them hydrated and motivated, it’s crucial to remember that these runners have trained specifically for this challenge. Attempting such an activity alone in extreme heat is highly discouraged.

Runners Battle the Elements in Circle of Hell Run

A determined group of trail runners took on the sweltering heat at Pima Canyon Trail during the fifth annual Circle of Hell Run. This three-hour race tested the limits of experienced runners, who faced temperatures soaring well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. FOX 10's Nicole Krasean was on site to report on the event.

"If you were out here doing this on your own, say last Tuesday, it’d be the most miserable thing in the world. But you get a bunch of happy, energetic people out here and it just changes it entirely," organizer Chrisztopher Rotten said.

What Are the Rules?

Participants take part in the 5th annual Circle of Hell Run on South Mountain.

The rules are simple yet demanding: complete as many one-mile loops as possible between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Each loop brings runners back to a central point where they can refuel with water and electrolytes.

The final "death lap" must be finished after 5 p.m., adding an extra layer of challenge as the temperature peaks. This last lap often determines the true endurance and mental fortitude of the participants.

Organizers note that the Circle of Hell Run has grown each year, with camaraderie being a significant draw for participants. The sense of community and mutual support helps runners push through the intense physical and mental barriers presented by the extreme heat.

The event raises money for the Arizona nonprofit 2gether We Live, which supports local community initiatives and provides resources for those in need.

Disclaimer:

We want to remind you that these participants have trained their bodies to run in this heat, often practicing for months leading up to the event to acclimate themselves to the extreme conditions.

The average person should not attempt such an activity during an excessive heat warning, as the risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are significant. Always prioritize safety and ensure you are adequately prepared if you plan to engage in any strenuous activities during extreme weather conditions.
