PHOENIX — An 8-year-old African lion named Boboo at the Phoenix Zoo was humanely euthanized after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that affected both his kidneys and spleen.

The Phoenix Zoo reported that Boboo showed no signs of illness during his annual exam just a month prior to the diagnosis, underscoring the rapid and aggressive progression of the disease. The zoo's veterinary team conducted a thorough examination and found the cancer to be advanced and untreatable, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize Boboo to prevent further suffering.

Boboo arrived at the Phoenix Zoo from the Columbus Zoo in Ohio in 2019 as a 3-year-old cub. Over the years, he became a beloved figure at the zoo, captivating both staff and visitors with his majestic presence and powerful roars.

"He was well loved by his keepers, Zoo staff, and guests, and the Zoo will certainly be quieter without his roars and calls," the Phoenix Zoo stated in a heartfelt news release. Boboo's keepers and zoo staff described him as a charismatic and playful lion who enjoyed interacting with his environment and the people who cared for him.

Boboo's legacy lives on through his offspring. Earlier this year, he sired two cubs with a lioness named Zuri. The cubs are reportedly thriving, showing excellent growth and development. Their progress has been a source of pride and joy for the zoo, contributing to the broader conservation efforts for African lions.

"This was the first litter sired by Boboo, so we are thankful that his genes will contribute to the Species Survival Plan population," the zoo mentioned. The Species Survival Plan (SSP) is a cooperative breeding and management program designed to ensure the survival of endangered species in zoos and aquariums. Boboo's contribution to the SSP is a significant milestone for the Phoenix Zoo and the broader conservation community.
