SARASOTA, Fla.- For five consecutive days, Dr. Randall Wells and his team from the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, in collaboration with Brookfield Zoo Chicago, found themselves in an unexpected role. Instead of focusing solely on their dolphin research, they were also collecting dozens of mylar balloons from the water.

"We were getting tired of putting the boat hook over the side and pulling these things out. We were out there doing dolphin research, not doing trash pickup, but we did pick up every balloon that we saw," Dr. Wells remarked. Over the course of their efforts, they retrieved a staggering total of 76 balloons. These balloons, often used to celebrate occasions like Mother’s Day and birthdays, pose significant dangers to wildlife once they end up in waterways such as Sarasota Bay or the Gulf of Mexico.

"When they come down in the Gulf of Mexico or another body of water, they deflate a little bit, looking like a jellyfish or another food source for animals, which can lead to dangerous outcomes," Dr. Wells explained. Once ingested by animals like turtles, dolphins, or whales, the balloons can obstruct their digestive tracts, leading to severe health issues or even death.

The dangers of balloon pollution were tragically highlighted last fall when a whale calf died off the coast of North Carolina. Biologists discovered a crumpled mylar balloon in its stomach, which impaired its ability to digest food and ultimately led to starvation.

The problem extends beyond visible pollution. "With the emerging issues of plastic pollution, even the data from Sarasota Bay dolphins indicate they are getting microplastics in their tissues at levels higher than found in humans," said Dr. Wells. Microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic that result from the degradation of larger plastic products, have been found in alarming quantities in marine organisms. These particles can accumulate in the food chain, potentially impacting human health as well.

In response to the growing plastic pollution problem, Florida enacted a new law on July 1 banning the intentional release of balloons. Dr. Wells views this legislation as a critical step toward protecting marine life. "When I see the balloons, I see the potential for death among wildlife, and it’s senseless. It’s not necessary. People can be better stewards of their environment than they are being with these balloons," he emphasized.

The impact of plastic pollution is not limited to wildlife ingestion. The presence of plastics in marine environments can lead to entanglement, habitat disruption, and the introduction of harmful chemicals into ecosystems. Animals that become entangled in plastic debris can suffer from injuries, reduced mobility, and increased vulnerability to predators.

Dr. Wells and his team continue their dolphin research while advocating for environmental stewardship and raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution to wildlife. Their work includes studying dolphin behavior, health, and populations, providing critical data that informs conservation efforts.

The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, established in 1970, is the world’s longest-running study of a dolphin population. It focuses on the bottlenose dolphins of Sarasota Bay, employing various research methods, including photographic identification, health assessments, and acoustic monitoring.
