St. Petersburg Grandmother Loses Everything in Devastating Fire, Community Rallies to Help Rebuild

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Victoria Deavers, a 65-year-old grandmother, is facing the daunting task of rebuilding her life after a devastating house fire destroyed everything she owned. The fire broke out on Friday evening along 15th Avenue North, engulfing the secondary structure behind her home.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, as authorities work to determine what sparked the flames that have upended Deavers’ life.

A photo captured on Friday shows bright orange flames and heavy smoke pouring from the building, which housed all of Deavers’ belongings. "I have definitely lost everything that I have ever collected in my entire life. Things that my children gave me, things that my grandparents gave me before they died. Things that my mom gave me before she died," Deavers said, reflecting on the magnitude of her loss.

Deavers’ situation is particularly challenging given her recent separation from her husband. She was in the midst of moving her belongings from the two-story building behind their former home when the fire broke out. Firefighters were called to the residence in the 2700 block of 15th Avenue North just before 6 p.m. on Friday. St. Pete Fire Rescue reported that upon arrival, they found the bulk of the fire concentrated on the roof.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the firefighters issued a second alarm to call for additional support. They battled the blaze through heavy rain, ultimately managing to extinguish the fire after a strenuous effort.

"I was so blessed that nobody got hurt," Deavers said, expressing gratitude despite her profound loss. "As for losing everything, it takes time to rebuild, and I'm 65 years old. I'm going to rebuild, and I have the blessing of my family to help me out."

Deavers is currently staying with her children in Chiefland, Florida, about two hours north of St. Pete, as she figures out her next steps. She is still coming to grips with the total loss of her possessions, many of which held deep sentimental value.

"I had a doll that my mother gave me, and right now it's about 150 years old. It was a porcelain doll that she had when she was a little girl, and she gave to me," Deavers recounted, highlighting the irreplaceable nature of some of her lost items. "Priceless heirlooms that my children made for me, my grandchildren made for me. It's a big loss for everybody involved."

The fire has not only robbed Deavers of her personal belongings but also severed a tangible connection to her past. Items passed down through generations, holding family memories and heritage, are now gone.

Firefighters’ quick response helped prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring structures, but the damage to Deavers' property was extensive. The community has rallied around her, offering support and assistance during this difficult time. Local organizations and neighbors are also stepping in to help Deavers navigate the aftermath of the fire.

As Deavers begins the long process of rebuilding her life, she remains hopeful and determined. "I'm 65 years old, but I’m not giving up. With the support of my family and friends, I’ll get through this," she said.

Deavers' story underscores the unpredictable nature of life and the strength required to overcome such devastating losses. Her resilience, bolstered by the support of her loved ones, offers a poignant reminder of the importance of community and family in times of crisis. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on helping Deavers recover and rebuild, ensuring she has the resources and support she needs to start anew.
