NAPLES, Fla. - Three individuals are facing animal cruelty charges after deputies discovered them attempting to sell puppies on a Southwest Florida beach amid sweltering heat, with the heat index surpassing 100 degrees. Officers from the Naples Police Department were called to the Naples Pier around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Concerned beachgoers reported seeing several people pulling a beach cart filled with puppies, attempting to sell the dogs under the scorching sun. The individuals reportedly tried to conceal the puppies by covering them with a blanket.

Conditions of the Puppies

Upon arrival, officers found six puppies under the blanket. The conditions were alarming; the blanket deprived the puppies of fresh air and trapped heat. At the time, the heat index in Naples was approximately 110 degrees, exacerbating the dangerous conditions for the young dogs.

Two of the puppies were in severe distress, exhibiting symptoms such as shallow breathing and near-unresponsiveness, indicative of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. The individuals involved were identified as Ernest Augustin of Immokalee, and Mariel Palominoca Campos and Yuniesky Campos Hartman, both from Cape Coral. The Naples Police Department charged all three with cruelty to animals, a first-degree misdemeanor. According to the police, the individuals "unnecessarily deprived the dogs of necessary sustenance or shelter in a cruel manner."
