PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Volunteers from Saving Paws Rescue AZ sprang into action Monday morning to rescue a horse that had been spooked by firetruck sirens and ran away from its home, causing quite a stir in the neighborhood.

The incident unfolded when two volunteers from the Phoenix-based dog rescue organization were in the area and witnessed the horse, startled by the loud sirens of a passing firetruck, break through a fence and escape its yard. Recognizing the potential danger, they immediately took action to alert the horse’s owner. Simultaneously, an SRP volunteer who was nearby called the authorities to report the runaway horse.

One of the volunteers from Saving Paws Rescue AZ quickly jumped into his truck to follow the horse, which was seen galloping down Union Hills Drive. As the horse bolted through the busy street, concerns grew for both its safety and the safety of motorists.

In a fortunate turn of events, some quick-thinking good Samaritans managed to intercept the horse in the parking lot of a shopping center near 43rd Avenue. They were able to corral the horse and keep it from running further, averting what could have been a much more dangerous situation.

Shortly after the horse was stopped, the Saving Paws Rescue AZ volunteers, Phoenix police officers, and the horse’s owner arrived on the scene. The combined efforts of these individuals were crucial in calming the frightened animal and ensuring it did not attempt to escape again.

The horse, visibly shaken but unharmed, was gently soothed by its owner.
