1. A Wisconsin-based coffee manufacturer, Snapchill LLC, has initiated a voluntary recall of its canned coffee products shipped nationwide due to potential contamination risks. The recall follows a warning from federal officials that the production process could result in the formation of a deadly toxin.

Snapchill LLC issued the recall earlier this month for all its canned coffee products within the expiration date. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the current manufacturing process "could lead to the growth and production" of botulinum toxin in low-acid canned foods. Botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is one of the most potent toxins known and can cause severe foodborne illness.

The recalled products were distributed through various roasters and retailers across the country, as well as through Snapchill's website. The range of products includes various coffee blends and flavors, packaged in metal cans ranging from 7 ounces to 12 ounces. Consumers can identify the recalled products by the "Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC" text printed underneath the nutrition facts panel on the can. Additionally, some products are labeled with "Snapchill Coffee."

The FDA's notification to Snapchill highlighted that the low-acid canned foods manufacturing process used by the company had not been filed with the agency, a regulatory requirement designed to ensure safety and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria like Clostridium botulinum. Without this filing, the production process may not adequately control factors that prevent the growth of botulinum toxin.

Botulism, caused by the ingestion of botulinum toxin, is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Symptoms of botulism can include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, respiratory issues, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. These symptoms can manifest anywhere from six hours to two weeks after consuming contaminated food. Given the severity of these symptoms, the FDA and Snapchill urge anyone experiencing them to seek immediate medical attention.

Despite the recall, Snapchill has reported no illnesses related to their products so far. The company has stated that they are not aware of any instances where their products contained the toxin. However, as a precautionary measure, Snapchill is working on filing the appropriate documentation with the FDA to ensure future compliance and safety.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are advised to stop consuming them immediately.
