Monica Aldama, the renowned cheerleading coach featured in the Netflix series "Cheer," has retired from Navarro College after nearly three decades of leading the cheer program. However, her tenure was marred by controversies, including the arrest of a cheerleader for sex crimes and allegations of mishandling sexual assault claims. Despite these challenges, Aldama’s legacy as a transformative figure in competitive cheerleading remains significant.:
Monica Aldama, whose dedication and intense coaching style catapulted her and her Navarro College cheer team into the national spotlight through the Netflix series "Cheer," has announced her retirement. The announcement marks the end of nearly three decades of Aldama’s leadership at the community college in Corsicana, Texas, where she transformed the cheerleading program into a powerhouse in the competitive cheerleading world.
A former cheerleader herself, Monica Aldama was initially hired to teach mathematics and sponsor the cheerleading program at Navarro College. Her journey from a small-town cheerleading coach to an iconic figure in the sport is a testament to her unwavering commitment and exceptional coaching abilities. Under her guidance, Navarro's cheer team won 17 national titles at the annual collegiate competitions in Daytona Beach, Florida, organized by the National Cheerleaders Association.
The Netflix series "Cheer," which premiered in 2020, documented the grueling preparation and emotional journeys of the Navarro cheerleaders as they trained for national competitions. The series provided an unprecedented look into the world of competitive cheerleading, showcasing the physical and emotional demands placed on the athletes. It also highlighted Aldama's coaching philosophy, characterized by strict discipline and high expectations, which earned her both admiration and criticism.
Monica Aldama's success with Navarro Cheer brought her widespread recognition, leading to appearances on talk shows, a parody on "Saturday Night Live," and a stint on "Dancing With the Stars." She also authored a book in 2022, further cementing her status as a celebrity coach. However, her tenure at Navarro was not without controversy.
One of the most significant challenges came when Jerry Harris, a fan-favorite cheerleader from the show, was accused and later convicted of sex crimes involving minors. Harris’s arrest and subsequent 12-year prison sentence shocked the cheerleading community and cast a shadow over the Navarro program. The second season of "Cheer" dealt with the fallout from these events, showing the team’s and Aldama's struggles to navigate the scandal.
Further controversy arose when a former Navarro cheerleader filed a civil lawsuit claiming that Aldama pressured her to remain silent after she reported being sexually assaulted by another team member. Aldama denied the allegations, calling them "demonstrably false," and was temporarily suspended by USA Cheer, the sport's national governing body, during the investigation. Although Aldama was eventually dropped from the lawsuit and reinstated by USA Cheer, the incident added to the challenges she faced in her final years at Navarro.
In a statement, Monica Aldama's lawyer, Russell Prince, indicated that her decision to retire was partly influenced by forthcoming litigation she and another administrator, also named in the lawsuit, plan to file. Aldama did not want this legal battle to overshadow Navarro College's upcoming cheer season.
Despite these controversies, Aldama's impact on competitive cheerleading is undeniable. Her ability to build a championship-winning program from the ground up, coupled with her dedication to her athletes, has left a lasting legacy in the sport. She expressed relief at being cleared by USA Cheer but also criticized the organization for its handling of the investigation, emphasizing the need for better protection for athletes.
As Monica Aldama steps down after completing the fall 2023 semester, her departure marks the end of an era for Navarro College and competitive cheerleading. Her career is a complex tapestry of triumphs and trials, underscored by her relentless pursuit of excellence and the challenges inherent in maintaining a top-tier athletic program. Her story, as told through the lens of "Cheer," remains a powerful narrative of ambition, resilience, and the high stakes of competitive sports.
