Sarah Boone Cant Keep A Defense Attorney
Sarah Boone's tumultuous quest to find a suitable defense attorney has been likened to Goldilocks' search for the perfect fit.
Boone, accused of sealing her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., in a suitcase during a supposed game of hide-and-seek, has cycled through a series of defense attorneys. Her eighth lawyer, Patricia Cashman, was dismissed as "too snotty" by Boone, who is facing second-degree murder charges. Boone has harshly criticized previous defense attorneys, labeling one as a "dud" and a "buffoon," according to Court TV. In her numerous letters to the court, she asserted that her seventh attorney lacked the ability to communicate effectively.
The frustration extends to the defense attorneys themselves. One suggested Boone should represent herself, arguing that no lawyer could meet her satisfaction, while another noted their relationship had become "adversarial," as reported by Fox 35 Orlando from court filings.
Details of the Alleged Incident
The grim events unfolded in the couple's Orange County, Florida home in February 2020. Boone told law enforcement that she and Torres had been drinking wine and playing hide-and-seek before she passed out on her bed. However, evidence suggests a different narrative.
Video footage allegedly recorded on Boone's phone portrays a distressing scene. In the video, Boone is heard laughing while Torres pleads for help from inside the suitcase. Boone allegedly taunts him, saying, "For everything you've done to me, [expletive] you! Stupid. That's on you. Oh, that's what I feel like when you cheat on me," according to Fox 35 Orlando. This footage was discovered by authorities and adds a layer of complexity to Boone's defense.
Boone's Legal Struggles
During a pre-trial hearing on June 7, 2024, Boone's court-appointed attorney, Patricia Cashman, cited "irreconcilable differences" and "ethical considerations" as reasons for her withdrawal from the case, as per Court TV. Boone had filed an extensive, over 50-page complaint against Cashman prior to this appearance, detailing her grievances.
Cashman described the challenges she faced while working with Boone since taking on the case in February. "I’ve spent over 20 hours going through her questions and lists," Cashman reported in court. "When I try to update her on recent depositions, she opted to leave the jail conference. When I attempted to review discovery details, she walked out."
Boone's erratic behavior extended to her court interactions. She requested the judge to instruct Cashman to "please be nice to me and have a welcoming attitude," as reported by Court TV. With Cashman officially removed from the case, Boone's future legal representation remains in flux.
The Long Road to Trial
Boone's strained relationships with her defense attorneys have significantly delayed her trial. Initially charged with second-degree murder for the February 2020 death of Jorge Torres Jr., the legal proceedings have been prolonged due to her difficulties in retaining consistent legal counsel. The trial is currently scheduled for October 7, 2024, but it remains uncertain if this date will hold or if further delays will ensue due to the ongoing attorney issues.
Boone's case has drawn considerable media attention, partly due to the bizarre and tragic circumstances of the alleged crime, and partly due to her contentious interactions with multiple defense attorneys. As the trial date approaches, the court and the public await to see who will ultimately represent Boone and how the case will unfold in court.
