The Popes Got Jokes
Comedy at the Vatican
Last Friday, an unprecedented and jovial gathering of international comedians unfolded at the most unsuspecting place… the Vatican!
Pope Francis orchestrated a huge gathering, extending invitations to a distinguished lineup that included comedy legends such as Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert, and Conan O’Brien, among others, to join him in Rome. The audience, comprising over 200 attendees, buzzed with excitement as more than 100 comedians from 15 different countries filled the venue with laughter and anticipation.
Known for his warm demeanor and quick wit, the 87-year-old Pope often lightens his encounters with jokes, playfully requesting, “Please pray for me… not against me!” Emphasizing the therapeutic value of laughter, he views humor as a daily prayer that uplifts and brings a perspective of grace. Francis has expressed, "Humor lifts us up, reminding us of life's fleeting nature and encouraging a grace that mirrors God's own."
Why It Happened
This unique gathering of "humor artists" was portrayed by the Vatican as part of Pope Francis’ ongoing effort to connect with contemporary culture. In an official statement, the Vatican underscored how comedy can foster empathy and solidarity in a global society, reflecting the Pope's belief in the unifying power of laughter.
The event followed Pope Francis’ notable participation in the Venice Biennale, an esteemed international art exhibition where he highlighted art's role in shaping societal values. It took place amid ongoing discussions regarding the Pope’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues, particularly following reports of insensitive remarks made during private conversations.
The American contingent included prominent comedians like Tig Notaro and Jim Gaffigan, both devout Catholics, alongside Colbert and Fallon, who have strong Catholic backgrounds. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, also in attendance, admitted in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that she had “no idea” what to expect from this unique gathering.
Fr. James Martin, known as “The Colbert Report’s Chaplain,” added a spiritual dimension to the event with his presence. As a Jesuit priest advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion within the Church, Fr. Martin's participation underscored the intersection of faith and humor in contemporary discussions.
Colbert, anticipating his meeting with the Pope, humorously remarked on his show, “Pope Francis is actually going to meet me at the Vatican! Can you believe it? Is the Pope Catholic?”
In a light-hearted gesture, Colbert offered a playful warning to Chris Rock, alluding to the Oscars incident involving actor Will Smith. He jokingly advised, “Chris, for your own safety, I’d steer clear of mentioning Mary Magdalene. That Pope’s got a big ring!”
Addressing recent controversies, including reports of the Pope using offensive language towards LGBTQ+ individuals, Colbert humorously questioned, “What’s up with that, Pope Frankie?”
Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg, renowned for her role in “Sister Act,” had previously met Pope Francis during a Vatican audience last year. In a humorous moment, Goldberg playfully proposed a cameo for Francis in “Sister Act 3,” known for its themes of transformation and spiritual discovery.
This event not only celebrates the art of comedy but also underscores Pope Francis’ ongoing efforts to bridge cultural divides and engage with diverse voices in today’s complex world. His approach highlights the synergy between faith, humor, and contemporary issues, aiming to foster dialogue and understanding across different communities and perspectives.
