Whats Going On In Washington DC

In February, a group of 26 PHS students experienced an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., as part of a Close Up program. Led by history teacher Alli Cota, the students immersed themselves in government operations, visited various memorials and monuments, participated in workshops and mock congress sessions, and engaged in discussions with political staff. The trip not only enhanced their understanding of government and politics but also provided valuable social interactions with peers from across the country, helping them reflect on diverse perspectives and build upon their own values.

A Transformative Journey: PHS Students Explore Washington, D.C.

The rapid thumps of hearts beating with thrill, the rejuvenating scent of exhilaration in the air, the movement of gliding past people swiftly. This is not a group of kids whizzing through a ski run—this is a group of 26 PHS students receiving an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

From February 18 to February 24, a group of PHS students embarked on an educational adventure to Washington, D.C., facilitated by the Close Up Foundation and led by their history teacher, Alli Cota. This unique opportunity allowed students to delve deeply into the workings of the U.S. government, witness history firsthand, and engage in thought-provoking political discussions.

Immersive Government Education

During their six-day stay, the students were provided with a comprehensive understanding of government operations. Close Up, a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing, inspiring, and empowering young people to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy, organized the program. The curriculum included visits to memorials and monuments, workshops, mock congress sessions, and an exclusive tour of the Capitol.

Cota highlighted the value of Close Up’s program, which offers students a closer look at government functions. “Close Up arranges a lot of wonderful opportunities,” Cota said. “For example, they bring in people who live and work in D.C. for a domestic issues debate—one liberal, one conservative—and they discuss real-world important social, political, and economic issues.”

Exclusive Capitol Hill Experience

One of the highlights of the trip was Capitol Hill day, where students had the opportunity to engage with the legislative process. Sophomore Isabella Lenders shared her excitement about this experience: “[The highlight of the trip for me] was Capitol Hill day, when we got to go into Congress and talk to the staff of one of the representatives.”

The students visited various government buildings, including embassies and the Pentagon, and spent an entire day on Capitol Hill. They had pre-arranged meetings with staff from their representatives’ offices, providing them with insights into the legislative process and the day-to-day operations of the government.

Social Interaction and Diverse Perspectives

While the primary focus of the trip was on government and politics, the social aspect played a significant role in the students' experiences. The program brought together high school students from different states, including Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Louisiana, and Missouri.

Senior Emma Nielsen, who participated in the Close Up D.C. trip the previous year, emphasized the importance of meeting peers from various backgrounds. “Our roommates were from Miami, so it was fascinating trying to see their perspective because a lot of people have different beliefs than we do here,” Nielsen said. “It’s really eye-opening to meet other people from [states all around] the country and learn about what they believe in.”

This interaction with students from different regions allowed PHS students to reflect on their own ethics, values, and opinions. Junior Ella Hughes expressed her anticipation for the trip, looking forward to engaging in discussions with people involved in policy. “I’m looking forward to being able to see actual people involved in policy and discuss [certain] issues because we don’t get a particularly diverse viewpoint in the Bay Area because it tends to lean so liberal,” Hughes said.

A Journey for All Grades

Although the majority of participants were juniors, due to the relevance of their U.S. History courses, sophomores and seniors with a keen interest also joined the trip. Senior Simran Titan, who had wanted to attend the previous year, finally made the trip with a friend as a senior. “It’s fun to go on an independent trip and also get to know the city because I may be going to college around [D.C.],” Titan said.

Exploring the City

Following the conclusion of the Close Up program, the students enjoyed an additional free day to explore the city. They visited landmarks such as the Smithsonian Mall and Georgetown, enriching their understanding of the nation's capital beyond the structured program.

A Legacy of Learning

This trip marked the twenty-third D.C. excursion organized and chaperoned by Cota. Her dedication to providing students with these experiences stems from the invaluable lessons they gain. “I get excited about watching the little light bulbs go on [in students’ heads] when they [have] a new experience [such as] navigating public transportation [or living] with other students [which are both] sort of a pre-college [thing],” Cota said. “It gives them a window to do things that they might not have experienced before.”

The Impact of Close Up Programs

Close Up’s programs are designed to provide students with an insider’s perspective on democracy in action. They focus on fostering civic engagement and encouraging young people to become active participants in their communities and government. The organization has been operating since 1971 and has educated over 900,000 students and teachers.

Educational Workshops and Mock Congress

The educational workshops conducted during the trip are a cornerstone of the Close Up experience. These workshops are interactive and encourage students to think critically about current issues. The mock congress sessions, in particular, allow students to role-play as members of Congress, debating and voting on legislation. This hands-on approach helps students understand the complexities of the legislative process and the importance of civic participation.

Meeting Political Figures

Another highlight of the Close Up program is the opportunity to meet political figures and policymakers. Students often get the chance to interact with members of Congress, their staff, and other government officials. These meetings provide students with a firsthand look at the challenges and responsibilities of public service.

Cultural and Historical Exploration

Beyond the political and educational aspects, the trip also includes cultural and historical exploration. Students visit iconic landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. These visits offer a deeper understanding of the nation’s history and the sacrifices made by those who served.

The Role of Chaperones

Chaperones like Cota play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the trip. They provide guidance, support, and supervision, helping students navigate the experience and make the most of their time in D.C. Cota’s long-standing involvement with the Close Up program reflects her commitment to student learning and civic education.

Student Reflections

Students who participate in the Close Up D.C. trip often reflect on the profound impact it has on their understanding of government and their role as citizens. The experience challenges their preconceived notions, broadens their perspectives, and inspires them to become more engaged in civic activities.

Senior Emma Nielsen shared her reflections on the trip, highlighting the value of interacting with students from different backgrounds. “Meeting people from all over the country and hearing their perspectives was eye-opening. It made me realize how diverse our nation is and how important it is to listen to and understand different viewpoints,” she said.

Preparing for the Future

For many students, the Close Up D.C. trip is a stepping stone to future endeavors. The skills and knowledge gained during the trip prepare them for college and beyond. The experience of navigating a new city, engaging in political discourse, and interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds equips students with valuable life skills.

Senior Simran Titan mentioned how the trip influenced her future plans. “Exploring D.C. and learning about its significance made me consider attending college in the area. The trip opened my eyes to new possibilities and helped me think about my future in a different way,” Titan said.
