Cold Water Caution: Hypothermia Risks Loom at Arizona Lakes as Temperatures Climb

As Arizona warms up and the appeal of lake activities grows, the risks associated with cold water can often be overlooked. Sgt. Robert Marske of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, with 16 years of experience investigating boating accidents, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the dangers of springtime water activities. Despite warm air temperatures in the 70s and 80s, water temperatures often remain significantly colder, sometimes in the 50s and 60s, creating a deceptive and hazardous environment.

Marske points out that hypothermia can occur even in water temperatures that may seem relatively mild, like the high 70s. He cites instances where hypothermia has led to fatalities or contributed to drowning incidents. This issue is particularly critical at Arizona lakes, where numerous drownings have been recorded, including a distressing incident in February 2022 where two brothers died from hypothermia after their canoe capsized at Lake Pleasant.

The groups most vulnerable to these dangers are those engaging in activities where sudden immersion is possible, such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing. The immediate involuntary response to cold water immersion can cause gasping and involuntary water inhalation, which can be fatal. This response, along with cold shock—a reaction that includes uncontrollable breathing, heart issues, and impaired mental capabilities—can significantly compromise safety.

To enhance safety and mitigate the risks associated with cold water immersion, Marske and the MCSO recommend several best practices:

- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) approved by the Coast Guard.

- Secure yourself to your watercraft with a rope or tether to prevent separation if you capsize.

- Never go out on the water alone; always have a companion who can assist in emergencies.

- Keep a communication device on you, ideally in a waterproof case, to call for help if necessary.

- If unable to re-enter a capsized boat, try to get as much of your body out of the water as possible to conserve heat and stabilize yourself.

By following these safety measures, water enthusiasts can better protect themselves from the hidden dangers of cold water, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience on Arizona's lakes during the spring season. Prioritizing safety can make outdoor recreational activities both enjoyable and safe, preserving the joy of lake outings for everyone.
