Disney's New Price Hikes for Ad-Free Streaming Services Now in Effect
Disney's anticipated price increases for the ad-free versions of its streaming platforms, Disney+ and Hulu, went into effect on Thursday. The California-based media conglomerate officially raised the monthly subscription rates for these services by $3. Disney+ now costs $13.99, up from $10.99, and Hulu is priced at $17.99, up from $14.99. This pricing information was confirmed through the platforms' official help center websites.
The entertainment giant had informed investors in August about the impending adjustments and shared its intention to implement these price changes in October. Despite these increases for the ad-free tiers, Disney opted to maintain the price of its standalone ad-supported plans at $7.99 per month.
During Disney's quarterly earnings call in August, CEO Bob Iger emphasized the company's focus on keeping their content accessible to a wide audience. "Maintaining access to our content for as broad an audience as possible is top of mind for us, which is why pricing for our standalone ad-supported Disney+ and Hulu offerings will remain unchanged," he explained.
Disney introduced the ad-supported Disney+ subscription in December 2022, and it quickly gained traction, attracting 3.3 million subscribers by the end of the third quarter. Iger noted the strong growth potential of the advertising market in the streaming space, remarking that it was "picking up."
"We believe in the future of advertising on our streaming platforms, both Disney+ and Hulu," Iger said. "And we’re obviously trying with our pricing strategy to migrate more subs to the advertiser-supported tier. It should also be noted that a substantial amount of new subscribers to Disney+ are signing up for the ad-supported tier, which suggests that the pricing is working for us in that regard."
As of July, the total combined subscriber count for Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar stood at 146.1 million. Hulu, the company's other major streaming platform, reported a subscriber base of 48.3 million.
Disney's streaming ecosystem, which includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, collectively reached 219.6 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter. The company hopes the new pricing structure will continue to drive growth while ensuring broad access to its wide array of high-quality content.
