Patrick Mahomes says he doesn't agree with things Harrison Butker said, but calls him 'great person'

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes came to the defense of his teammate, kicker Harrison Butker, on Wednesday amidst controversy over comments Butker made during a graduation speech. Despite disagreeing with some of Butker’s views, Mahomes emphasized Butker’s character and integrity.

“I’ve known Harrison for seven years, and I judge him by the character he shows every day, which is that of a good person,” Mahomes said to reporters at the Chiefs' training complex in Kansas City. “He cares about those around him, his family, and wants to make a positive impact on society.”

Mahomes highlighted the diversity of opinions within an NFL team and the need to respect differing views. “In the locker room, there are people from all walks of life,” Mahomes explained. “While I don’t necessarily agree with everything he said, I understand his intentions to lead people in the right direction. That might not align with my values, but I judge him by his daily actions and consider him a great person.”

Butker faced significant backlash for his speech at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas. During his address, Butker advised female graduates that they had been misled about the importance of career advancement, suggesting their true value lies in serving their husbands and children. He also criticized gay pride celebrations, labeled abortion and IVF treatments as societal “disorders,” and denounced “the tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Following Butker’s speech, Mahomes spoke at a Time magazine event, where he lauded the rise of women’s sports. “I’d like to raise a glass to a new era in sports, an era where women’s sports are finally getting the recognition they deserve,” Mahomes said, receiving applause. “Women’s sports are incredible and deserve our attention.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also commented on the situation, noting he had not spoken to Butker about the speech but defended his kicker’s right to his views. “We all get along and respect each other’s opinions,” Reid said. “I don’t think he intended to speak ill of women; he has his opinions, and we respect that.”

This controversy within the Chiefs' organization underscores the challenges of maintaining team unity amid personal beliefs and public scrutiny. Despite differing opinions, both Mahomes and Reid stressed the importance of mutual respect and understanding within the team. The ability to navigate these internal conflicts while maintaining solidarity is crucial for the success of any team, particularly one as high-profile as the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes' defense of Butker also highlights the broader issue of how public figures navigate their personal beliefs and public personas. In a highly polarized environment, the responses from Mahomes and Reid reflect a careful balance between supporting a teammate and recognizing the diverse views within their community. This incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in leadership and the importance of fostering an environment where differing opinions can coexist respectfully.
