He also criticized gay pride celebrations, labeled abortion and IVF treatments as societal “disorders,” and denounced “the tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Following Butker’s speech, Mahomes spoke at a Time magazine event, where he lauded the rise of women’s sports. “I’d like to raise a glass to a new era in sports, an era where women’s sports are finally getting the recognition they deserve,” Mahomes said, receiving applause. “Women’s sports are incredible and deserve our attention.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also commented on the situation, noting he had not spoken to Butker about the speech but defended his kicker’s right to his views. “We all get along and respect each other’s opinions,” Reid said. “I don’t think he intended to speak ill of women; he has his opinions, and we respect that.”
