Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning have initiated preliminary contract negotiations, with the veteran captain optimistic about remaining with the team he's spent his entire NHL career with.

Julien BriseBois, our general manager, contacted my agent following Game 5, Stamkos revealed during the team's locker cleanout on Wednesday. "It's just the beginning, but I'm hopeful about engaging in more detailed discussions."

Stamkos is on the brink of free agency, eligible for unrestricted status on July 1. He last signed a substantial eight-year, $68 million contract back in June 2016. These conversations started after the team's season concluded with a 6-1 defeat to the Florida Panthers.

BriseBois has made it clear that securing Stamkos is a critical agenda item for the Lightning, a team that first picked him in the 2008 NHL Draft. "Stamkos is a key player for us, and extending his contract is certainly a priority," he stated.

Reflecting on his career and personal life developments, Stamkos expressed a deep connection to the Tampa Bay area, where he and his family have established their home. "The drive to win and contribute significantly to this team's culture still excites me. Although personal circumstances have evolved, my commitment to this city and team remains unchanged," he said.

Throughout his tenure, Stamkos has been instrumental in the Lightning's success, including two Stanley Cup wins. He was particularly impactful in the recent playoffs and ended the regular season on a high note, contributing significantly to the team's playoff berth.

BriseBois lauded Stamkos's exceptional performance and leadership, especially noticeable post-trade deadline. "Stamkos has not only showcased his legendary skills on the ice but has also amplified his leadership role within the team, filling the gaps left by departing players," BriseBois noted.

Stamkos emphasized his professional focus despite the contract uncertainties, ensuring that such matters do not hinder his on-ice contributions. "I've made it clear that my contract situation will not affect my performance or team dynamics," he affirmed.

Additionally, BriseBois mentioned ongoing discussions regarding a new contract for Victor Hedman, another staple of the Lightning's roster. Talks with Hedman's agent have begun, with further negotiations expected soon.

Hedman, reflecting on his longstanding relationship with the Lightning, expressed a strong desire to finish his career with the team.
