“Drag is joy, but it’s under attack. Our very existence, our self-expression, our art — all of it is being threatened. And we’ve had enough.”

That’s the opening statement from Qommittee, a coalition of drag performers formed to protect and promote their art. Announcing their formation ahead of June’s LGBTQ Pride Month, Qommittee seeks to address the increasing threats to drag performers' safety and rights.

“We’ve always had to fight tooth and nail for our place in this world,” the group stated in a news release. “But now, we’re also battling a tidal wave of hate — doxxing, harassment, death threats, armed protests, bombings, and even shootings.”

Qommittee comprises around ten drag performers nationwide who have experienced threats, harassment, or violence related to their art. Members include one who had a venue firebombed in Ohio, another who performed at Club Q in Colorado Springs and aided victims during the deadly shooting there, and one who worked at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, the site of a mass shooting in 2016.

Qommittee aims to connect drag performers and communities with resources like legal aid and therapy and assist performers and venues with business navigation. The group is also working to establish dialogues between its members and local law enforcement agencies.

“The Qommittee stands as a central hub for other communities across the country to find resources to help them, whether it is negotiating with venues or defending against the many protests against drag shows,” said Qommittee President B Williams, a drag king performing in Washington, D.C., as Blaq Dinamyte.

In recent years, conservative activists and politicians have accused drag performers of “sexualizing” or “grooming” children, targeting events like drag story hours and brunches. Despite a lack of evidence supporting these claims, the rhetoric has fueled hostility and resulted in armed protests and legislative restrictions. At least five states have enacted laws limiting drag performances, though courts have paused enforcement in some cases.

As Pride Month approaches, Scott Simpson, a community organizer who helped form Qommittee, emphasized that drag is both an art and an industry fostering entrepreneurship and job creation. Simpson called on fans and allies to support the drag community actively.

“The time to really come together is now, especially during joyful moments,” said Simpson, who also works for the unaffiliated Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. “Drag is the revolution, and we want to keep it going.”

Qommittee's mission extends beyond protection, aiming to build a resilient and supportive community. By providing legal support, mental health services, and business guidance, Qommittee empowers drag artists to continue their work without fear.
