The Portal' Art Installation Bridges Dublin and New York City in Real-Time
A cutting-edge art project has created a live, visual bridge between Dublin and New York City. Aptly named 'The Portal,' this public art installation connects the two cities via an on-street sculpture that provides a 24/7 live stream between the two locations.
This innovative project seeks to unite citizens from either side of the Atlantic Ocean, allowing people in Dublin and New York, as well as visitors, to interact in real time. The Dublin portal is strategically located on O'Connell Street, offering views of both the GPO and the Spire, while the New York portal is positioned at the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street, a bustling New York City intersection.
The installation was unveiled by Dublin's Lord Mayor, Daithí De Róiste, accompanied by a special performance from The Liberties Majorettes in recognition of the transatlantic connection. Mayor De Róiste emphasized the importance of inclusivity: "I encourage Dubliners and visitors to interact with the sculpture and extend an Irish welcome to cities worldwide."
'The Portal' will be a fixture in Dublin throughout the summer, offering a schedule of cultural events viewable in both cities via live stream. Programming will kick off with a visual event for New York Design Week in mid-May, and later, in July, Dublin's portal will connect to other global cities like Poland, Brazil, and Lithuania.
The Lithuanian artist and founder of the portal, Benediktas Gylys, said, "Portals invite people to meet across borders, differences, and geographical boundaries, providing a glimpse into the beauty of our interconnected world."
The collaborative effort between the Flatiron NoMad Partnership, Simons Foundation, NYC DOT Art, Dublin City Council, the EU Capital of Smart Tourism, and portals.org team aims to captivate New Yorkers, Dubliners, and visitors while providing a new digital and physical space for human connection.
