The Winklevoss twins just invested millions in a tiny British soccer club
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the billionaire twins renowned for their lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg over the alleged theft of their idea for Facebook, are making headlines again with their latest investment in sports. The twins, who currently operate the crypto exchange Gemini, announced on Friday that they have invested $4.5 million worth of bitcoin in Real Bedford Football Club (RBFC), positioning it as the “first football club powered by bitcoin.”
RBFC, a non-league, semiprofessional soccer club based in Bedford, England, was acquired in 2022 by bitcoin investor and podcaster Peter McCormack. With this new deal, the Winklevoss twins will join McCormack as co-owners of RBFC. McCormack, a lifelong Bedford resident, sees this partnership as a natural fit due to their shared enthusiasm for bitcoin.
“There was this value alignment with all of us being early bitcoiners,” Cameron Winklevoss explained to CNBC, highlighting the vision, conviction, and persistence required to be early adopters of bitcoin. “Being early in bitcoin is the ultimate acid test. You have to hold it through the good times and the bad. Any journey like this will be a bumpy road. There will be setbacks and hardship.”
McCormack chose the Winklevoss twins as partners because he believed they could help invest in the infrastructure needed to scale the club. Part of the investment will go towards building a new training center, which is expected to cost around £1.6 million ($2 million). Importantly, McCormack intends to retain the bitcoin investment as a "rainy day" fund, opting instead to borrow pounds to finance the training center. He anticipates that the training center will pay for itself over a seven-year period by generating revenue for the club.
“The smart move is to hold the bitcoin, borrow pounds to pay for it, and then the training center pays for itself over a seven-year period because it’s also part of a club that brings money in,” McCormack said.
The Winklevoss twins are not the first American celebrities to invest in U.K. soccer clubs. Actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds famously bought the small Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC for £2 million ($2.5 million) in February 2021.
This investment by the Winklevoss twins marks a significant milestone for RBFC and highlights the increasing intersection of cryptocurrency with traditional sports. By leveraging their expertise in bitcoin, the Winklevoss twins aim to transform RBFC into a model of innovation and financial stability.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, both Harvard graduates and former Olympians, have been prominent figures in the cryptocurrency world. Their investment in RBFC is a testament to their ongoing commitment to promoting and utilizing bitcoin in various industries. This move also underscores the growing trend of utilizing digital currencies in mainstream applications, including sports and entertainment.
As RBFC embarks on this new chapter with the Winklevoss twins, the club is poised to benefit from enhanced financial resources and strategic direction. This partnership aims to propel RBFC to new heights, both on and off the field, through the innovative use of cryptocurrency.
Furthermore, this investment signals a broader shift in how sports teams may finance their operations and growth. The integration of cryptocurrency into sports can potentially revolutionize how clubs manage their finances, engage with fans, and explore new revenue streams. The Winklevoss twins' involvement in RBFC could serve as a blueprint for other sports organizations looking to incorporate digital currencies into their financial strategies.
As the world of sports continues to evolve with technological advancements, the partnership between the Winklevoss twins and RBFC represents a pioneering step towards a future where cryptocurrency plays a central role in sports finance and management. The success of this venture could pave the way for more widespread adoption of digital currencies in the sports industry.
This investment also exemplifies the growing synergy between technology and sports, highlighting how innovative financial solutions can support the growth and development of athletic institutions. The Winklevoss twins’ commitment to integrating cryptocurrency with sports not only bolsters RBFC's financial stability but also sets a precedent for other clubs to explore similar opportunities.
As RBFC moves forward with this groundbreaking partnership, the club is expected to see substantial improvements in its infrastructure, operations, and overall financial health. The addition of a state-of-the-art training center funded by this investment will enhance the club's capabilities, providing better facilities for players and attracting more talent. This, in turn, can boost the club's performance and reputation, making it a formidable force in its league.
The partnership between the Winklevoss twins and RBFC also highlights the potential for cryptocurrency to create new and diverse investment opportunities within the sports industry. By embracing digital currencies, sports clubs can tap into a global network of investors and fans, driving engagement and financial growth. This innovative approach to sports management could redefine the traditional models of club ownership and financing, leading to a more dynamic and financially robust sports industry.
