Growing up, she was fortunate to have supportive mentors who nurtured her curiosity and encouraged her aspirations. However, she acknowledges that not all aspiring scientists have access to such guidance.

I hope to inspire the next generation of researchers who may see themselves in me – a Latina scientist breaking barriers and making meaningful contributions to the field," she expressed with conviction.

In her role at the Translation Research Institute, Dr. Corbin is not only advancing scientific knowledge but also serving as a role model for aspiring scientists, particularly Hispanic women.

"It's crucial to expose young minds, especially those from underrepresented communities, to the wonders of STEM from an early age. We need to foster a culture where every child feels empowered to pursue their dreams, regardless of their background," she asserted.

Yet, amidst this rich tapestry of talent, statistics from a 2021 Pew Research Center study paint a sobering picture: a mere 8% of Hispanics pursue careers in STEM fields, with only 3% being women.

Moreover, Dr. Corbin is actively involved in outreach programs aimed at engaging minority youth in STEM activities and mentoring aspiring scientists from similar backgrounds.

Through her dedication to research, mentorship, and advocacy, Dr. Karen Corbin is not only advancing scientific frontiers but also championing diversity and inclusion in STEM, paving the way for a brighter, more equitable future.

Walking into a research lab feels like second nature to Dr. Karen Corbin; it's a place she's always known she belonged.

"I can vividly recall dreaming about donning a white coat and uncovering new discoveries. As a little girl, I didn't fully grasp what that meant, but the image persisted in my mind," reminisced Corbin, whose passion for science ignited at the tender age of 9 when she relocated from Puerto Rico to Central Florida.

Now, at the Translation Research Institute within AdventHealth, Corbin fulfills her childhood vision, clad in that very same white lab coat, delving into the intricacies of human metabolism.

"What's particularly fascinating about this institute is the diversity of women scientists it houses. We come from all corners of the globe – Colombia, Brazil, and beyond. It's like a microcosm of inclusivity and innovation," she enthused.
