Tijuana Flats, a Florida-based restaurant chain celebrated for its vibrant hot sauces and sizable burritos, recently declared that it has entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This announcement coincides with the closure of 11 restaurants and the introduction of new ownership, according to a press release issued by Business Wire.

Founded about 30 years ago in Winter Park, Florida, Tijuana Flats had expanded its presence across the United States, with 65 of these locations being company-owned within Florida. The management of the chain has transitioned from TJF USA, LLC to a new entity, Flatheads, LLC. As part of its restructuring, the company also rolled out a new menu on April 1.

Joe Christina, who became the Chief Executive Officer of Tijuana Flats in 2022, expressed optimism about the direction the new owners are taking the company. "Since joining the brand, I have been dedicated to delivering the most flavorful Tex-Mex food and the best guest experience in the country," said Christina. He highlighted the new ownership's commitment to refocusing on the core attributes that have made Tijuana Flats a favorite among many. "Our company is excited by the new ownership group’s plan to reinvest, focus, and emphasize the qualities that originally attracted so many to Tijuana Flats. We are aware of the immediate financial strategies they have implemented to ensure the long-term viability of this iconic brand.”

The press release also noted that Tijuana Flats will continue to support its franchise network and that its remaining outlets will operate as usual. Under the new ownership, Christina will remain at the helm as CEO, steering the company through these changes and looking to reinforce its position in the market.
