In a horrifying incident in the Dandeli rural area of Karnataka, south India, police arrested a couple after the mother allegedly threw their deaf and nonverbal 6-year-old son into a crocodile-infested canal, resulting in the tragic death of the child. The event occurred on Saturday, as per police reports to CBS News. Savitri, 26, reportedly committed the act following a dispute with her husband.

Following the incident, neighbors promptly alerted the authorities, which led to a search operation that included divers. "We recovered the child's body from the canal on Sunday morning," said Karnataka Police sub-inspector Krishna Arakeri, who is leading the investigation. He noted that the child's body bore multiple injuries, and one hand was missing, likely consumed by a crocodile.

The couple has been detained and faces several charges, including murder. They are currently held in custody awaiting trial for 15 days. Following a post-mortem examination, whose results are pending, the child's body was handed over to other relatives.
