United bans dozens of pet breeds from its cargo holds after animal deaths, mix-ups

United Airlines is instituting significant revisions to its animal transportation protocols in the aftermath of several unfortunate incidents involving pet fatalities and mishaps. Commencing from June 18, the updated policy stipulates that United will exclusively convey dogs and cats in the cargo hold, alongside a prohibition on numerous short-nosed dog breeds. This strategic realignment follows a string of distressing events, notably the tragic demise of a passenger's French bulldog puppy, which was mistakenly stowed in an overhead bin during a United flight in March. Subsequent occurrences, including dogs being transported to incorrect destinations, further accentuated the necessity for stricter regulations. Additionally, last year witnessed the heartbreaking loss of a traveler's spaniel under United's supervision, along with the unfortunate demise of a giant rabbit en route from London to Chicago.

In a proactive effort to mitigate health hazards, United will no longer accommodate over 20 dog breeds and four cat breeds in its cargo holds, encompassing breeds like Boston terriers, boxers, pugs, and Persian cats. While these measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of animals during transit, they present logistical hurdles for both pet owners relocating over extended distances and animal breeders reliant on airline services for the shipment of their prized cargo.

This revised policy aligns United more closely with industry peers such as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, both of which have implemented analogous restrictions to safeguard animal welfare during air travel. Collaborating with American Humane, a prominent animal welfare organization, United is striving to elevate its pet transportation program and uphold the highest standards of animal care.

Despite these proactive measures, United encountered scrutiny for reporting the highest number of animal fatalities among U.S. carriers to the Department of Transportation, with 18 reported deaths last year alone. In response, the airline is proactively addressing concerns regarding extreme temperatures by imposing restrictions on when and where pets can be transported, particularly during periods of peak heat. Notably, United will abstain from transporting cats and dogs in the cargo hold between May 1 and September 30 for routes involving Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Phoenix, and Tucson, Arizona.

Following the suspension of its pet transportation services in the wake of recent incidents, United has implemented measures to bolster safety protocols, including the issuance of brightly-colored bag tags for animals accompanying passengers in the cabin. While the revised regulations primarily impact cargo hold transportation, United is also conducting a review of its in-cabin pet policy to ensure comprehensive safeguards for all animals under its care.
