2 teens arrested in deadly drive-by shooting spree in North Carolina

Police Arrest Two Teenagers in Charlotte Shooting Spree

Charlotte, North Carolina—Police announced Thursday the arrest of two teenagers in connection with a series of seemingly random drive-by shootings that left one person dead and two others injured earlier this week.

The incidents, occurring between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, involved multiple instances of shots fired from a vehicle at vehicles and bicyclists, Deputy Chief Tonya Arrington of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department explained at a press conference.

Law enforcement officers, patrolling the scenes of the shootings on Thursday, spotted a suspicious vehicle where they discovered a 16-year-old boy with a stolen firearm inside. He was promptly taken into custody and later interviewed. Subsequently, an 18-year-old man, identified as Carlos Roberto Diaz, was arrested later that same day. Authorities confirmed there were no other suspects at large.

"It was good, old-fashioned police work. Our officers were in the right areas at the right time and knew what to look for," Deputy Chief Arrington emphasized. "Sometimes, it's just a gut instinct that guides you as an officer."

According to Arrington, the 16-year-old suspect had intentions to continue his violent spree, averted only by the swift actions of law enforcement. "Thanks to the great work of our officers and detectives, they were able to prevent additional harm to innocent victims," she stated.

The younger suspect, whose identity was not disclosed due to his age, faces charges including first-degree murder and has been transferred to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Carlos Roberto Diaz, 18, faces a range of charges including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy to commit murder, five counts of attempted murder, two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

At the time of reporting, it was unclear whether Diaz had retained legal representation.

Police continue to investigate the incident, including determining the number of firearms used and the driver of the vehicle involved in the shootings.

The first shooting occurred around 1 a.m. when Mustaffa Muhammad, 58, was fatally shot while driving northbound on Statesville Avenue. Minutes later, a bicyclist was shot at but not injured at the intersection of Lasalle Street and Newland Road. Shortly after, gunfire struck a vehicle on Lasalle Street near Interstate 77, followed by another incident on Catherine Simmons Drive where a female victim was struck by gunfire while inside a nearby home.

The final shooting targeted a bicyclist in the Steel Creek area on Hillary Circle, where the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries. During the investigation, officers also discovered a residence that had been hit by gunfire.

Forensic analysis has linked three of the shootings to the crime spree. Deputy Chief Arrington clarified that investigators have found no evidence linking the incidents to gang activity, and the motive behind the shootings remains unclear.

"We're still asking the same questions—why would two juveniles engage in this type of behavior on random victims?" Arrington questioned. "It's one thing when there's a shooting spree between rival gangs or neighborhood conflicts, but this is just completely unusual."

The investigation into the shootings continues as law enforcement seeks to understand the circumstances that led to these tragic events in Charlotte. The series of attacks has not only resulted in a tragic loss of life but also left the community on edge, questioning the safety of their streets.

In response to the violent spree, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has increased patrols in the affected areas and urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Community leaders have called for unity and resilience as the city comes to terms with the random nature of the violence.

The arrests of the two teenagers mark a significant step in addressing the immediate threat, but the broader implications of such senseless acts of violence on youth and community safety continue to be a focal point for law enforcement and civic discussions. As the legal process unfolds, the community hopes for justice and a deeper understanding of the factors that led to these tragic events, striving to prevent future occurrences.

As the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department works diligently to complete its investigation, the focus remains on supporting the victims' families and providing resources to help the community heal from the shock and grief caused by the shooting spree. The incident has sparked conversations about youth violence, gun control, and the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
