2 women charged in 'romance schemes' to defraud elderly men out of $7 million, feds say

Two women, Rosanna Lisa Stanley and Gina Guy, stand accused of orchestrating sophisticated "romance schemes" aimed at elderly men, allegedly defrauding them of more than $7 million over several years. The charges, meticulously outlined in a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, detail a complex operation that preyed upon the victims' desire for companionship.

According to prosecutors, Stanley and Guy employed a variety of methods to ensnare their victims, including face-to-face meetings, phone calls, text messages, and online dating platforms. They allegedly cultivated relationships under false pretenses, portraying themselves as interested in romantic or deeply personal connections. Once trust was established, they allegedly coerced the victims into transferring money under false premises, such as investments in fictitious businesses or fabricated medical emergencies like organ transplants.

The elaborate scheme began to unravel with the arrests of Stanley in North Miami Beach, Florida, and Guy in New York City on June 25. Both now face serious charges including money laundering, wire fraud, and conspiracy, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, underscoring the gravity of the allegations.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams condemned their actions as predatory and exploitative, highlighting the emotional and financial devastation inflicted upon the victims. Williams emphasized that Stanley and Guy purportedly diverted millions of dollars to fund lavish lifestyles, in stark contrast to the financial ruin they allegedly imposed upon elderly individuals who trusted them.

Specific examples detailed in the complaint vividly illustrate the breadth of the alleged deceit. Stanley allegedly convinced one victim that she possessed psychic abilities to cleanse "tainted" money, securing over $1 million from him. Another victim reportedly granted Stanley access to his credit card, resulting in substantial unauthorized charges for personal expenses.

Similarly, Guy allegedly preyed on four elderly men by fabricating urgent medical needs, ostensibly for procedures like kidney transplants. Instead, prosecutors allege, she diverted funds to cover personal luxuries including fine dining, rent, and high-end purchases. One victim allegedly transferred more than $700,000 under the guise of financial management services, purportedly aimed at optimizing returns on his investments.

Assistant Director James Smith of the FBI characterized Stanley and Guy's actions as a profound betrayal of trust, highlighting their calculated exploitation of vulnerable individuals seeking companionship. Smith underscored the significant financial losses suffered by the victims, which allegedly funded the defendants' opulent lifestyles.

As legal proceedings progress, questions linger regarding the defendants' legal representation, with attempts to contact the court during non-business hours proving inconclusive. The case underscores the persistent threat of financial exploitation targeting elderly communities, necessitating heightened vigilance and caution in both online and offline interactions.

Beyond financial implications, the alleged crimes cast a shadow over the victims' hopes for genuine relationships and leave a lasting mark on their trust in others. The ongoing legal proceedings against Stanley and Guy serve as a stark reminder of the repercussions for those who exploit vulnerabilities for personal gain, underscoring the imperative for robust enforcement to safeguard vulnerable populations from such predatory practices.
