A Baltimore man died after being sedated and restrained by medics. His mom wants answers.

In Baltimore, the tragic passing of Trea Ellinger has left his family grappling with profound grief and lingering uncertainties. Last summer, after leaving a drug rehabilitation facility, Trea assured his mother, Lori Ellinger, of his well-being and plans to meet his girlfriend. However, within hours, his life abruptly ended during an encounter with first responders in downtown Baltimore, where he was sedated and restrained.

At 29 years old, Trea's death was attributed to an overdose of an antidepressant and methadone, medications prescribed to manage his mental health and opioid cravings, respectively. Lori Ellinger remains skeptical of the autopsy findings, believing that the injectable sedative administered by paramedics played a fatal role.

This incident underscores a troubling trend identified by a recent Associated Press investigation: the use of sedatives on individuals detained by police, intended to de-escalate situations but sometimes resulting in preventable fatalities.

Police body camera footage captured critical moments of the incident. Responders, aware of the risks associated with placing individuals face down, hesitated to intervene decisively when Trea turned onto his stomach and remained in that position for an extended period. Independent experts suggest that this prone positioning, coupled with sedation, may have compromised Trea's airways, potentially contributing to his tragic outcome.

The Baltimore City Fire Department, responsible for the involved medics, provided policies on sedative use and physical restraints but refrained from commenting on the specifics of Trea's case due to potential legal considerations. No charges have been filed against the responders, and the Ellinger family has not pursued legal action.

Under a state-mandated inquiry, the Maryland attorney general's office primarily scrutinized police actions rather than those of the medics or other responders. The report highlighted missed opportunities to safely reposition Trea, exposing procedural deficiencies in managing the rapidly evolving situation.

Eric Jaeger, an emergency medical services educator, emphasized the critical importance of proper airway management, suggesting that appropriate positioning could potentially have altered the outcome for Trea.

Gail Van Norman, a professor emeritus of anesthesiology, acknowledged the inherent risks of midazolam, the sedative administered. While acknowledging potential medical errors, she empathized with the challenging decisions confronting medics in high-pressure scenarios.

Despite the investigative findings and tragic outcome, Baltimore prosecutors opted against pursuing charges against any parties involved. For Lori Ellinger, who cherishes memories of her son's love for music symbolized by a guitar-shaped necklace, Trea's loss resonates deeply. Raised in northeastern Maryland, Trea navigated challenges with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia throughout his life.

In the months leading to his passing, Trea was committed to recovery, supported by methadone treatment and efforts to stabilize his life. His sudden death has left a void in Lori's heart, compounded by the circumstances of his final moments spent disoriented and distressed in downtown Baltimore.

Navigating her grief, Lori clings to memories of Trea's adventurous spirit and the joy he found working with a traveling carnival. Despite his struggles, Trea's journey was marked by resilience and hope, cherished forever by his loving mother.

"I love and miss him," Lori reflected on their shared years. "But it wasn't enough."
