A wildfire currently sweeping through Santa Barbara County, California, has engulfed more than 20,000 acres and is still only 8% contained, according to the latest briefing from Cal Fire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Named the Lake Fire, the blaze originated near Lake Zaca and was first reported on Friday afternoon. Despite intensive efforts by helicopters and air tankers to suppress its spread, the fire rapidly grew in size over the weekend. As of Monday afternoon, it continues to advance, driven by high temperatures, gusty winds, and dry vegetation, presenting a significant threat to the region.

Of particular concern is the historic Neverland Ranch, once owned by renowned pop star Michael Jackson, spanning 2,700 acres along Figueroa Mountain Road. Evacuation orders have been issued for residents stretching from Figueroa Mountain Road to Chamberlin Ranch and from Zaca Lake Road to Foxen Canyon Road, including areas up to the Sisquoc River. Firefighting crews are diligently working to contain the blaze and safeguard nearby communities.

The ranch, celebrated for its expansive grounds featuring amusement park rides and a zoo, has become a focal point of concern as the fire approaches its periphery. Michael Jackson purchased the property in 1988 and held it until his passing in 2009. The current threat to its preservation has garnered widespread attention and concern.

Firefighting efforts have faced substantial challenges, exacerbated by thick smoke that has hindered aerial operations, reducing visibility and operational efficiency.
