The New York Police Department is actively investigating a disturbing incident involving Ben Chang, a staff member at Columbia University, who reported being assaulted and subjected to xenophobic slurs near campus last week.

Ben Chang, 52, recounted the harrowing experience that took place on June 17 as he commuted to work. According to NYPD reports, an individual approached Chang just blocks away from the university, aggressively yelling at him and striking him with a metal water bottle. Throughout the altercation, Chang remembered the assailant hurling xenophobic insults, including the directive to “go back to your f‐‐‐‐‐‐ country.” Even after the physical assault, the individual continued to follow Chang for some time.

The incident, categorized as a potential hate crime, has sparked widespread concern. The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force has been alerted, though as of now, no arrests have been made.

In an interview with NBC News, Chang expressed his shock over the unprovoked attack. He clarified that there was no prior interaction with the assailant, nor any apparent reason for such hostility. Chang, a native of the D.C. area with deep American roots, emphasized the unsettling nature of the incident, stating, “My mom grew up in West Virginia. We don’t get much more American and apple pie. And that’s jarring.”

During the ordeal, Chang endeavored to ignore the aggressor and proceed on his route. Seeking refuge, he managed to board a passing bus with aid from a fellow passenger and the bus driver. Nevertheless, the aggressor persisted in verbally harassing Chang from outside the bus. Chang disembarked a couple of blocks away, only to find the individual had followed him, making another attempt to approach. It was only after Chang alerted a school public safety officer that the individual finally departed.

Despite the traumatic encounter, Chang did not necessitate medical attention. Reflecting on the incident, he expressed hope that the perpetrator would receive the necessary support and desist from similar actions in the future.

Having resided in New York City for two years, Chang highlighted the rarity of such incidents in his personal experience, further underscoring the shock and disbelief surrounding the attack.
