Employers added 206,000 jobs in June, as sturdy labor market gradually cools

June Jobs Report: Economy Adds 206,000 Jobs, Unemployment Ticks Up

July 5, 2024, Washington — The latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday morning reveals that the U.S. economy added 206,000 jobs last month, slightly exceeding economists' expectations of 200,000 nonfarm job gains. However, this increase comes amid broader signs of a cooling job market, highlighted by significant downward revisions to earlier months' data.

"The June rise in nonfarm payroll was slightly above expectations, but the notable downward revisions to April and May are crucial," remarked Kathy Jones, chief fixed income strategist at Charles Schwab, reflecting on the updated figures. "The job market appears to be slowing down."

Initial reports from May were revised downward from 272,000 to 218,000 jobs, while April experienced a substantial reduction, with 111,000 fewer roles added than previously reported.

Despite these adjustments, the labor market has consistently outperformed expectations in recent months, maintaining robust conditions even as hiring momentum moderates. The latest report indicates a gradual tightening of labor market conditions.

Average hourly earnings for workers rose by 3.9% in June compared to the previous year, marking a slight deceleration from earlier rates but remaining above pre-pandemic levels. This increase continues to outpace inflation, which stood at 3.3% as of May 2024.

However, for the first time since November 2021, the unemployment rate edged above 4%, reaching 4.1% in June. This remains historically low, accompanied by a marginal rise in the labor force participation rate, which increased to 62.6% from 62.5% in May.

The combination of slowing job growth and moderated inflation has reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve could commence interest rate cuts as early as September. Such actions could provide relief for borrowers, including those managing credit card debt and mortgages.

"If the job market continues to cool and inflation remains subdued, the Fed is likely to shift its focus more towards achieving maximum employment," explained Bankrate Senior Economic Analyst Mark Hamrick in response to the report.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell recently indicated a balanced approach to achieving its inflation and employment objectives, suggesting readiness to adjust policies as needed for economic stability.

"The longer the Fed maintains its current interest rate strategy, the greater the risk of potentially curbing economic growth too severely," cautioned Moody's Chief Economist Mark Zandi, pointing to concerns over recent upticks in unemployment claims and job market volatility.

Despite these challenges, economists such as RSM Chief Economist Joe Brusuelas view the latest job figures as indicative of an economy stabilizing to a sustainable pace. "The addition of 206,000 jobs reflects full employment in an economy cooling towards its trend," he noted, highlighting ongoing speculation about a potential September rate cut.

Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, described the current job market as undergoing a "modulated cooldown," emphasizing the necessity of broad-based hiring to maintain economic momentum. ADP's own data indicated a gain of 150,000 jobs in June within the private sector, primarily driven by growth in leisure and hospitality.

"This gradual cooldown is unfolding as anticipated," Richardson affirmed during a CNBC interview, underscoring the importance of expanding hiring across diverse sectors to bolster economic resilience.

Looking ahead, economists and policymakers will closely monitor upcoming economic indicators to assess the job market's trajectory and its broader implications for economic stability in the months leading up to the presidential election.
