Extreme heat is changing where and when we vacation

Cathy Balestriere, the manager of Crane’s Beach House boutique hotel in Delray Beach, Florida, initially anticipated a sluggish month for bookings. However, contrary to expectations, reservations surged by an impressive 12% compared to the previous year, signaling an unexpected turnaround.

"It feels like a miracle based on where we were just a few weeks ago," she remarked, attributing the uptick not to chance but to recent weather patterns.

This surge coincided with a scorching mid-June heat wave that swept across the Midwest and Northeast, placing over 80 million people under heat alerts. These unseasonably extreme temperatures underscore the ongoing global climate warming trend.

"While Florida may not be the first destination that comes to mind for those seeking relief from the heat, it became a preferred choice after hometowns became equally sweltering," explained Balestriere.

Typically, Crane’s Beach House sees most guests from within the state or nearby regions during this time of year. However, a notable increase in last-minute bookings came unexpectedly from states such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Balestriere noted that despite the heat in Delray Beach, guests at her hotel could enjoy refreshing ocean breezes and access to the beach and pools.

Similarly, at Orlando’s Lake Nona Wave Hotel, reservations surged by a substantial 45% over the past three weeks compared to the previous year, largely driven by visitors seeking respite from stifling temperatures in the Northeast and Texas.

"We’ve had guests mention during check-in that the heat at home was unbearable," noted James Tattersall, the hotel's sales and marketing director.

Traditionally, "snowbirds" migrate to warm states like Florida during winter and spring, creating a high season when northern regions are cold. Now, Crane’s Beach House recognizes potential in the warmer months as well. The hotel has adjusted its seasonal editorial calendar, Google ad strategy, and newsletter messaging to capitalize on the increased off-season demand, according to Balestriere.

This trend highlights broader changes in tourist behavior as destinations adapt to shifting weather patterns and seasonal preferences.

"While not every destination is experiencing this impact in the same way, or at all, there is a clear trend towards seeking destinations with more comfortable summer temperatures amidst rising global temperatures," observed Jesse Neugarten, CEO of Dollar Flight Club, a travel deal alert service.

He highlighted a 31% surge in flight bookings from Northern cities like New York and Boston to Florida from May to June, driven by travelers seeking relief from heat waves.

Internationally, the heat has also sparked interest in cooler climates abroad. While Italy’s summer bookings saw a modest 3% increase, Scandinavia has witnessed a surge in popularity, with bookings up 25% overall. Iceland and Sweden, in particular, saw significant spikes of 49% and 47%, respectively, while even the Netherlands, traditionally limiting tourist volumes, reported a 33% rise in hotel demand this season, according to Virtuoso, a luxury travel network.

Andy Knestaut, 59, a retiree from Washington, D.C., opted for northern Europe over South America due to concerns about summer heat. "We chose Copenhagen and added two Baltic countries. We’ll travel from late July to late August," he explained.

As southern Europe’s warm weather extends into September, October, and November, some hotels and resorts that typically close after summer are extending their operations, creating a new peak season.

"Consumers will notice these shifts reflected in pricing," noted Chris Lafakis, a director at Moody’s Analytics, predicting that travel to favored destinations will become more expensive.

Despite these challenges, tourism experts like Tiffany Townsend of New York City Tourism and Conventions remain optimistic. "During hot weather, travelers tend to adapt rather than canceling trips," she explained. Activities like visiting museums, indoor attractions, and shopping gain popularity during scorching weather, with outdoor activities scheduled for cooler parts of the day.

Heather Dickie, 69, a Texas-based marketing consultant, is considering options to escape the heat. "If I can get out of Dallas," she mused, "Alaska sounds good." Alternatively, she might head towards Taos, New Mexico, where temperatures are more moderate.

As travelers adapt and seek refuge from extreme temperatures, the tourism industry faces both challenges and opportunities, navigating shifts in seasonal demand and consumer preferences amidst a changing climate.
