YA’AN, China — A momentous occasion unfolded on Wednesday as the first new giant pandas in over two decades embarked on their journey from China to the United States, representing a significant diplomatic initiative from Beijing aimed at bolstering relations with Washington.

The farewell ceremony near the Bifengxia Giant Panda Base in China’s Sichuan province drew dignitaries from both nations, including representatives from the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. This solemn event heralded the beginning of a new phase in the longstanding collaboration between China and the U.S. on panda conservation efforts.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria expressed his delight at the pandas' return to the San Diego Zoo after a hiatus since 2019. "It continues our long history of positive engagement in animal conservation, especially for endangered species like pandas," Gloria remarked during an interview at the panda base prior to the send-off ceremony.

Beyond the conservation efforts, the pandas' journey symbolizes a step forward in bilateral relations between the world's two largest economies, amidst recent tensions over trade, technology, and geopolitical issues such as Taiwan.

In preparation for their journey, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao underwent extensive training and medical care in China, including familiarizing themselves with English commands. They also acclimated to spending time in crates in readiness for their 7,000-mile flight to San Diego.

Caretakers and veterinarians from both countries, including American staff who had previously bonded with the pandas in China, accompany them on their journey, ensuring their comfort and well-being.

Huang Shan reassured that the pandas would enjoy a variety of nourishing treats during their flight, including bamboo shoots, carrots, apples, and cornbread, tailored to their preferences.
