First new pandas to arrive in U.S. in over 20 years are on their way from China

YA’AN, China — A momentous occasion unfolded on Wednesday as the first new giant pandas in over two decades embarked on their journey from China to the United States, representing a significant diplomatic initiative from Beijing aimed at bolstering relations with Washington.

The farewell ceremony near the Bifengxia Giant Panda Base in China’s Sichuan province drew dignitaries from both nations, including representatives from the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. This solemn event heralded the beginning of a new phase in the longstanding collaboration between China and the U.S. on panda conservation efforts.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria expressed his delight at the pandas' return to the San Diego Zoo after a hiatus since 2019. "It continues our long history of positive engagement in animal conservation, especially for endangered species like pandas," Gloria remarked during an interview at the panda base prior to the send-off ceremony.

Beyond the conservation efforts, the pandas' journey symbolizes a step forward in bilateral relations between the world's two largest economies, amidst recent tensions over trade, technology, and geopolitical issues such as Taiwan.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to engage our two countries in something that is undeniably positive," Gloria emphasized, highlighting the potential of panda diplomacy to foster goodwill and mutual understanding.

The departure of the pandas was conducted discreetly to avoid large crowds, reflecting the public's intense fascination with these iconic animals. San Diego Zoo officials confirmed that the pandas, on a 10-year loan, would not be immediately visible to the public upon their arrival, allowing them time to adjust before their eventual debut.

The two pandas, Yun Chuan, a 4-year-old male, and Xin Bao, a 3-year-old female, were described by their caretakers at the Ya’an facility as having distinct personalities. Yun Chuan is characterized as outgoing and lively, while Xin Bao, though more reserved, is noted for her intelligence and attentiveness to natural sounds.

Huang Shan, a giant panda caretaker, disclosed that the pandas displayed affection for each other, spending considerable time communicating through a tunnel during their pre-departure quarantine period.

The return of pandas to the U.S. had been uncertain following the repatriation of several from American zoos to China last year. Concerns had arisen with the impending expiration of the panda loan agreement at Zoo Atlanta, threatening the continuity of panda diplomacy between the two nations.

President Xi Jinping's 2021 remarks during a visit to California hinted at the possibility of more pandas heading to the U.S., specifically San Diego, prompting swift action from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Paul Baribault, president and CEO of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, recounted the proactive response to President Xi's statement, emphasizing collaborative efforts to facilitate the pandas' return.

In preparation for their journey, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao underwent extensive training and medical care in China, including familiarizing themselves with English commands. They also acclimated to spending time in crates in readiness for their 7,000-mile flight to San Diego.

Caretakers and veterinarians from both countries, including American staff who had previously bonded with the pandas in China, accompany them on their journey, ensuring their comfort and well-being.

Huang Shan reassured that the pandas would enjoy a variety of nourishing treats during their flight, including bamboo shoots, carrots, apples, and cornbread, tailored to their preferences.

Upon arrival in the U.S., the pandas will face the challenge of adapting to different bamboo varieties than those found in their native Sichuan, posing a particular challenge for Yun Chuan, known for his selective eating habits.

Megan Owen, vice president of conservation science at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, highlighted the comprehensive renovations made to the panda habitat in anticipation of their arrival. The enclosure now boasts expanded space, intricate topographical features, and abundant foliage resembling their natural habitat in China.

Regarding their public debut at the San Diego Zoo, Owen indicated that the timeline would hinge on the pandas' adjustment period post-quarantine, emphasizing that their comfort and well-being would determine when they are ready to greet visitors.

In conclusion, Owen reflected on the significance of the pandas' return, not only for the San Diego Zoo but also for global efforts in wildlife conservation and cultural exchange. The arrival of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao epitomizes a beacon of hope and cooperation in conservation endeavors amidst global challenges.

"We eagerly anticipate the moment when Yun Chuan and Xin Bao feel at home in their new environment and are prepared to meet visitors," Owen concluded, encapsulating the anticipation surrounding the pandas' arrival and their pivotal role in fostering international understanding through wildlife diplomacy.
