A man tragically lost his life at a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday, identified as 50-year-old former fire chief Corey Comperatore, as announced by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Sunday.

Shapiro also confirmed that two other Pennsylvania residents, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were shot at the rally and are currently in stable condition.

Comperatore, described as an enthusiastic supporter of Trump, attended the rally in Butler with his wife and two daughters. When gunfire erupted, he courageously shielded his family, an act Shapiro praised as selfless and heroic.

“Corey died a hero,” Shapiro remarked about the Sarver, Pennsylvania resident, adding that Comperatore was known locally as a devoted family man and active community member who regularly attended church.

President Joe Biden extended his condolences to Comperatore’s family during a Saturday afternoon speech, highlighting his bravery in protecting his loved ones during the shooting.

Paul Hayden, a longtime neighbor of Comperatore’s, recalled their friendly relationship despite differing political views, emphasizing their mutual respect and camaraderie over the years.

Brant Dempster, another neighbor, described Comperatore as patriotic and highly respected within their community. Dempster almost attended the rally himself but decided against it due to a sudden intuition.

David Fennell, who worked closely with Comperatore for two decades, remembered him as compassionate and dedicated, especially during Fennell’s battle with brain cancer.

Leroy Snow, a former colleague, emphasized Comperatore’s fairness and commitment to his family, noting his approachability and willingness to listen.

Shapiro characterized the shooting as shocking for both the local Butler community and the nation, underscoring the importance of peacefully resolving political disagreements.

Gunshots were heard approximately six minutes into Trump’s speech, prompting swift security responses. Trump acknowledged being struck near his right ear by a bullet but escaped serious injury.

The FBI reported that the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was immediately neutralized by Secret Service agents. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

During his remarks, President Biden condemned the violence, stressing that such acts have no place in American society and urging unity and peace in resolving differences.
