GM slows its EV plans again even as sales grow

General Motors Announces New Delays in All-Electric Vehicle Plans: Implications for Production Targets and Strategic Direction

DETROIT — In a major development for the automotive sector, General Motors (GM) disclosed on Tuesday significant adjustments to its timelines for all-electric vehicle (EV) initiatives. The company has announced further delays in the launch of its second U.S. electric truck plant and the debut of Buick’s first electric vehicle. This announcement is part of a broader strategic reassessment and has implications for GM's ambitious electrification objectives.

The delay in retooling the electric truck plant in Michigan will extend the timeline by six months, pushing the expected completion date to mid-2026. This shift means that GM will not meet its previously established goal of achieving a North American EV production capacity of 1 million units by 2025. This setback underscores the broader challenges facing traditional automakers as they transition to electric mobility.

"We are committed to growing responsibly and profitably," GM CEO Mary Barra emphasized during the company’s second-quarter earnings call. Barra’s remarks highlight the company's focus on maintaining financial stability while advancing its electrification strategy. This update follows concerns expressed by Barra a week earlier regarding the feasibility of meeting GM’s North American EV production capacity target.

The timeline for Buick's inaugural EV remains uncertain, with Barra not providing a revised release date. Initially scheduled for 2024, the launch of Buick’s first EV is now expected to be delayed as part of the brand's broader strategy to become fully electric by 2030. This goal aligns with GM’s overarching ambition to exclusively offer consumer EVs by 2035.

The revised timelines for these critical EV initiatives have introduced additional uncertainties regarding GM's plans for future battery cell production. The company had previously announced an ambitious strategy to establish four multibillion-dollar battery cell plants in the U.S. by 2026, in collaboration with LG Energy Solution. However, the delays in vehicle production and the lack of updated information on new battery cell facilities have led to questions about the future of these projects.

Barra reiterated the company’s commitment to increasing cell production at a "meaningful cadence." Nonetheless, GM Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Paul Jacobson did not provide specific details regarding potential delays or cancellations of future battery cell plants beyond the two existing joint venture facilities in Ohio and Tennessee. "We’re going to continue to be guided by the customer. We’re rapidly scaling in cell plants one and two," Jacobson stated during a media briefing. "We have nothing to comment on right now," he added, indicating a cautious approach to future announcements.

Despite the delays, GM reported a significant increase in U.S. EV deliveries, which surged by 40% during the second quarter compared to the previous year, reaching 21,930 units. However, electric vehicles still accounted for only 3.2% of GM’s total U.S. sales for the quarter. This statistic highlights the ongoing challenge of scaling up EV production and achieving market adoption in a highly competitive automotive landscape.

Jacobson outlined the company's projected production and wholesale targets for the year, aiming to assemble and deliver between 200,000 and 250,000 all-electric vehicles in North America. During the first half of the year, GM wholesaled approximately 75,000 new EVs. The company remains optimistic about achieving profitability for its electric vehicles on a production or contribution-margin basis once it reaches the target output of 200,000 units by the fourth quarter.

Despite these optimistic projections, Jacobson acknowledged that the profitability of GM's electric vehicles might be moderated by lower variable profits compared to the company’s traditional internal combustion engine models. "We’re still holding to that," Jacobson said, noting that while EV sales are expected to increase, they may initially contribute less to the company’s overall earnings compared to its gas-powered vehicles.

In summary, General Motors' latest announcements reflect a significant recalibration of its electric vehicle strategy, shaped by both operational challenges and market dynamics. The delays in key projects and the uncertain future of additional battery cell plants highlight the complexities faced by traditional automakers in their transition to an electrified future. As GM navigates these challenges, its commitment to a profitable and strategic growth trajectory will be crucial in determining the company's long-term success in the evolving automotive industry.
