He plays rich on screen, but this 59-year-old dreams of full-time work in real life: ‘Why can’t I get a living wage?’

Doug Sharp: Struggles and Hopes in Hollywood

Doug Sharp, a 59-year-old resident of Los Angeles, has navigated a career path that spans from driving for Uber and Lyft to occasional roles as a paid extra in Hollywood productions. His journey reflects both the allure and challenges of pursuing acting in an industry known for its unpredictability.

For Sharp, acting offers not only a potential income but also a chance to indulge in his passion alongside others who share his love for the craft. Despite the financial instability, Sharp has found moments of success, such as securing a small speaking role in an upcoming production featuring Hollywood A-listers. This opportunity saw his daily pay increase significantly, from around $200 to nearly $1,200, highlighting the sporadic yet potentially lucrative nature of acting gigs.

"The money for background is good, and there's always the possibility of being upgraded to principal," Sharp noted optimistically. "That has happened to me—it's a thrill I haven't found elsewhere."

However, the inconsistency of acting work has prevented Sharp from accessing full benefits from the Screen Actors Guild, relying instead on Medicaid for health insurance. His living situation remains unstable, involving periodic rentals from friends and other arrangements he prefers not to discuss publicly.

Sharp's economic outlook has been shaped by his experience driving for ride-share platforms, where declining base pay and fluctuating rates prompted him to largely step away from Uber and Lyft. Despite this, returning to these platforms remains a financial goal as he seeks stability in his income.

Reflecting on his journey, Sharp expressed the challenges of restarting his life in his 40s after earning a business degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Despite graduating in 2013, he faced a tough job market in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, leading him to find solace and income in ride-share driving.

"I started over later in life, hoping my degree would open doors," Sharp recounted. "Uber and Lyft were a lifeline, but as rates dropped, so did my financial security."

Sharp's financial struggles extend beyond income volatility; he grapples with depression and anxiety, compounded by societal perceptions and personal shame about his financial situation.

"People assume I must be lazy or worse because of my appearance," Sharp lamented. "It's hard when friends drift away, not understanding the reality of my daily challenges."

Despite qualifying for assistance programs like food stamps and Medicaid, Sharp remains determined to find sustainable work that pays a living wage. He's encountered barriers even in industries with higher hourly wages, such as fast food, due to competitive job markets and personal challenges.

"I'm willing to work hard—I've proven that," Sharp emphasized. "Yet, finding stable employment feels like an insurmountable hurdle."

As he navigates his current circumstances, Sharp remains hopeful for a breakthrough in his career and financial stability. His resilience and dedication underscore the complexities faced by many navigating uncertain economic landscapes, particularly in industries as demanding and competitive as Hollywood.
