A woman was rescued last week after a possible spider bite left her unable to feel the skin on her legs during a hike in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. This alarming incident occurred on June 12 on the Taboose Pass Trail, as reported by the Inyo County Search and Rescue team via Facebook.

The hiker, whose identity has not been disclosed, placed an emergency call for assistance around 6:30 p.m. She was approximately two miles from the trailhead when she approached a creek to collect water and reportedly sustained a bite from what she believed to be a spider. Following the bite, she experienced a loss of sensation in the skin on her legs, which incapacitated her and prevented her from continuing her descent along the trail.

Despite the severity of her condition, the woman managed to share her precise coordinates before her phone battery was depleted. The prompt provision of her location was crucial to the timely execution of the rescue operation.

In response, Inyo County Search and Rescue swiftly assembled a rescue team, which navigated the rugged road leading up to the Taboose trailhead. Equipped with a wheeled carrier, the rescuers pushed the carrier for about a mile and a half along the trail until the terrain became too challenging to proceed with it.

Upon locating the distressed hiker, the rescuers carefully assisted her in navigating the difficult section of the trail. They then transferred her into the wheeled carrier to facilitate the remaining part of the journey. The combined efforts of the hiker and the rescue team ensured that they reached the trailhead just before midnight.

In a statement, Inyo County Search and Rescue emphasized the importance of hikers carrying power banks to ensure their phones remain operational during such emergencies. They also reminded the public that trails like Taboose, Sawmill, Baxter, and Shepherd Pass are considerably less maintained compared to other trails in the Sierra Nevada, posing significant challenges with tricky sections and steep grades.
