'I don't debate as well as I used to': Biden tries to move on from his tough debate at an energized rally

President Joe Biden endeavored to reframe his lackluster debate performance as a rallying point for supporters during a robust event in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday. Despite facing critiques for his subdued demeanor and sporadic lapses during Thursday night's debate, Biden projected resilience and determination, affirming his commitment to seek re-election.

"I know I'm not a young man. I don't walk as easily as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know — I know how to tell the truth!" Biden declared energetically, acknowledging the scrutiny while contrasting his integrity with former President Donald Trump's record.

Accompanied by first lady Jill Biden, who donned a striking black dress emblazoned with the word "vote," Biden galvanized a supportive crowd, asserting, "When you get knocked down, you get back up. I intend to win this state in November. We win here, we win the election."

The campaign event, held in a traditionally Republican-leaning state, underscored Biden's determination to secure North Carolina's electoral votes, pivotal for his path to victory. Despite concerns over his performance, Biden's supporters rallied behind him, emphasizing his broader contributions and steadfast leadership.

Reflecting on the debate, Biden candidly admitted, "I spent 90 minutes on the stage and debated the guy who has the morals of an alley cat." Despite occasional coughing fits, Biden's delivery was animated, filled with pointed criticisms of Trump's ethical lapses and legal troubles.

A senior Biden adviser disclosed that the campaign team collaborated closely with the president to craft his address in Raleigh, aiming to directly address the debate fallout. The adviser emphasized that Biden's remarks were not solely a response to negative media coverage or internal pressures within the party calling for a change in leadership.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, joined Biden on stage, rallying the crowd with a call to action. "This election is not just about what kind of president we want to have. This election is about what kind of country we want to be," Cooper asserted, drawing strong reactions from the audience against Trump's administration policies.

Despite some Democrats expressing concerns about Biden's debate performance, supporters like John Burns expressed unwavering confidence in the president. "It wasn’t his best night, but he’s a better president," Burns affirmed. "He’s a better man, and he’s going to get my vote and my support for the next five months."

Tara Winters echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Biden's overall impact. "When you look at the totality of what he’s done for our country and what he means for us, then I think you walk away seeing not just one moment in time, but his contributions to our nation and society."

As Biden continues his post-debate campaign trail, Democratic figures across the nation offered varied perspectives. While some anonymously voiced concerns and calls for Biden to consider stepping aside, others like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro reiterated their unwavering support, urging Democrats to stand firm behind Biden's candidacy.

"We’ve got to go in, we've got to keep our heads high, and as I say, we’ve got to have the back of this president," Newsom asserted. "You don’t turn your back because of one performance."

Shapiro, appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," acknowledged Biden's debate challenges but underscored, "Joe Biden is up to the job."

Amidst the political turbulence, Biden's resolve and his supporters' steadfastness highlight a pivotal juncture in the 2024 election cycle, underscoring the stakes and intense scrutiny facing his campaign in the months ahead.
