Los Angeles Clippers star and Team USA forward Kawhi Leonard has opted to forego the upcoming Olympics, prioritizing his recovery and readiness for the NBA season ahead, as announced by USA Basketball on Wednesday.

Leonard, 33, persevered through a knee injury during the Clippers' playoff journey, which concluded with a first-round defeat against the Dallas Mavericks, eventual Western Conference champions.

In their statement, USA Basketball recognized Leonard's commitment to the national team while emphasizing the joint decision by the organization and the Clippers to ensure Leonard's focus on preparing for the NBA season, underscoring their dedication to his long-term health and performance.

Grant Hill, managing director of the USA Men’s National Team, expressed appreciation for Leonard's dedication in the face of challenging circumstances. "He earned the opportunity to represent the United States, but USA Basketball and Clippers leadership felt it’s crucial to allow Kawhi to prepare for the NBA season," Hill noted.

To replace Leonard, USA Basketball has added Derrick White from the Boston Celtics to the roster, joining teammates Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday. White's inclusion enhances Team USA's lineup with his renowned efficiency and defensive prowess, having played a pivotal role in the Celtics' recent championship campaign. He averaged 15.2 points per game, shooting an impressive 39.2% from beyond the arc and maintaining a stellar 90.1% free-throw shooting record.

Hill welcomed White's addition to the Olympic squad, highlighting his championship experience and defensive skills. "I am pleased to announce Derrick's participation in his first Olympic Games following a successful season in Boston," Hill remarked. "We eagerly anticipate his integration into the team as we continue our preparations for Paris."

As Team USA gears up to defend their gold medal in Paris, they will commence their campaign against Serbia on July 28 in Lille. Led by NBA luminaries such as LeBron James and Steph Curry, the American team aims to extend their supremacy in international basketball by securing a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

Despite their status as favorites, Team USA will face stiff competition, including Serbia with Nikola Jokić and Greece featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo. Hosts France, bolstered by stars like Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert, also present a formidable challenge in the pursuit of Olympic glory.
