James Sikking, 'Hill Street Blues' and 'Doogie Howser, M.D.' star, dies at 90

James B. Sikking, known for his iconic roles as Lt. Howard Hunter on "Hill Street Blues" and Dr. David Howser on "Doogie Howser, M.D.," has passed away at the age of 90. Sikking died on Saturday due to complications from dementia, according to a statement released by his publicist, Cynthia Snyder, on Sunday evening.

“In a remarkable career, Sikking’s wonderfully exciting face gave us drama, comedy, tragedy, and hilarious farce,” Snyder shared with Variety. “His career spanned over six decades in television, film, and on stage.”

Sikking was widely recognized for his portrayal of Howard Hunter on the police procedural series "Hill Street Blues," which aired from 1981 to 1987 on NBC. His performance as the clean-cut, pipe-smoking lieutenant earned him an Emmy nomination in 1984, cementing his place in television history.

Following "Hill Street Blues," Sikking took on the role of Dr. David Howser, the father of the prodigious teenage doctor Doogie Howser, played by Neil Patrick Harris, on the ABC medical sitcom "Doogie Howser, M.D." The show ran for four successful seasons from 1989 to 1993, further showcasing Sikking's versatility as an actor.

Sikking continued his collaboration with Steven Bochco, co-creator of both "Hill Street Blues" and "Doogie Howser, M.D.," by portraying a police officer once again on the short-lived CBS series "Brooklyn South" (1997-98).

Early in his career, Sikking made numerous guest appearances on popular television series, including "Perry Mason," "General Hospital," "The Outer Limits," "The Fugitive," "Rawhide," "Bonanza," "Ironside," "Starsky & Hutch," and "The Rockford Files." His broad range of roles in these series helped build a solid foundation for his later success as a series regular on "Hill Street Blues." In 2004, he appeared in two episodes of HBO’s acclaimed series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

On the big screen, Sikking was known for his role as Captain Styles in the 1984 film "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," directed by and starring Leonard Nimoy. He also played the director of the FBI in Alan J. Pakula’s 1993 legal thriller "The Pelican Brief." His extensive film credits include memorable roles in "Point Blank," "Made of Honor," "Fever Pitch," "Charro!," "Final Approach," "Ordinary People," "The Terminal Man," and "Von Ryan’s Express." Sikking collaborated with director Peter Hyams on four films: "Capricorn One," "Outland," "The Star Chamber," and "Narrow Margin."

Born on March 5, 1934, in Los Angeles, James Barrie Sikking was the youngest of five children. He was named after the author of "Peter Pan," J.M. Barrie. Sikking graduated in 1959 with a degree in theatre arts from UCLA, where he met his future wife, Florine Caplan. The couple shared more than 60 years of marriage.

Sikking is survived by his wife Florine, his son Andrew (Paula), his daughter Dr. Emily Sikking (Mallory “Chip” Milam), and four grandchildren: Lola and Gemma Sikking, and Hugh and Madeline “Maddie” Milam.

James B. Sikking leaves behind a legacy of diverse and memorable performances that have touched the hearts of many. His contributions to television and film will be remembered and cherished by fans and colleagues alike. His career not only spanned multiple generations of television viewers but also showcased his remarkable ability to embody a wide range of characters, from the stern and disciplined Lt. Howard Hunter to the caring and supportive Dr. David Howser. Sikking's work ethic and dedication to his craft made him a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, and his performances will continue to inspire actors and entertain audiences for years to come.
