This stolen information is subsequently exploited for identity theft or utilized to perpetrate various forms of financial fraud, leaving victims grappling with profound financial losses and the extensive repercussions of identity compromise.

In 2022 alone, consumers reported staggering losses totaling $367 million due to job and business opportunity scams, representing a notable 76% increase from the previous year as documented by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The average financial impact per victim amounted to approximately $2,000, illustrating the severity and profound impact of these deceitful practices.

Despite constituting only 9% of total identity scams in 2023, employment scams have emerged as a significant concern, ranking second only to Google Voice scams which comprised 60% of reported cases. According to Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of ITRC, these scams are rapidly evolving due to a convergence of factors including advancements in AI technology and the widespread adoption of remote work arrangements accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
