Karen Read investigator who sent vulgar texts about her case relieved of duty after mistrial

Massachusetts State Trooper Michael Proctor found himself embroiled in controversy following the declaration of a mistrial in the case involving Karen Read, who was accused in the death of Boston officer John O’Keefe. The mistrial arose from allegations that Proctor, as the lead investigator, mishandled evidence and made derogatory comments about Read during her trial.

Colonel John E. Mawn, Jr., issued a statement late Monday announcing that the Massachusetts State Police had swiftly relieved Trooper Proctor of his duties. This decision followed allegations that Proctor manipulated evidence and made offensive remarks about Read, which complicated the prosecution’s case against her for O’Keefe’s death.

During Read’s trial, her defense team accused Proctor of biased investigative tactics, arguing that he failed to thoroughly probe O’Keefe’s death on January 29, 2022. They alleged he overlooked other potential suspects and maintained personal relationships with individuals related to the case, including the Albert family, whose residence was the scene of O’Keefe’s death.

Proctor’s conduct came under scrutiny when it was revealed that he exchanged derogatory text messages about Read with fellow troopers. These messages contained offensive language and insensitive remarks, undermining the impartiality expected of a lead investigator in a high-profile case.

In response, Colonel Mawn reaffirmed the State Police’s commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity in law enforcement. He extended condolences to the O’Keefe family, acknowledging the heightened distress caused by the mistrial and the controversy surrounding the investigation.

The mistrial underscored the complexities of the case, presenting conflicting narratives about O’Keefe’s death. Prosecutors contended that Read deliberately struck O’Keefe with her SUV during a dispute, while her defense asserted that O’Keefe had been assaulted at a party and that Read was falsely accused.

Following the mistrial, Read’s defense team, led by attorneys David Yannetti and Alan Jackson, issued a statement condemning Proctor’s misconduct. They criticized District Attorney Michael Morrissey for supporting Proctor and reiterated their commitment to defending Read against what they deemed an unjust prosecution.

"Conduct has consequences," Yannetti and Jackson emphasized, signaling their readiness to challenge the investigation’s integrity in future proceedings. They voiced skepticism about the decision to pursue another trial against Read and expressed confidence in their ability to uncover the truth and advocate for justice on her behalf.

These unfolding events have not only cast doubt on the integrity of the investigation but have also raised concerns about oversight and accountability within law enforcement. As the internal affairs investigation into Proctor progresses, the case continues to draw public scrutiny and provoke legal debate, highlighting broader anxieties about the fairness and transparency of criminal justice procedures.
