Laid off from a nearly six-figure job, this 61-year-old has been driving for delivery apps: 'I don't get a day off'

Becky Melvin, 61, hailing from the Jacksonville, Florida area, previously held a distinguished role in public relations in Nashville, Tennessee, where she earned nearly six figures annually before being laid off in 2019. Since the onset of the pandemic, her life has undergone a profound transformation as she immerses herself in the demanding landscape of gig economy jobs, often laboring seven days a week with shifts that extend up to 12 hours as a delivery driver for platforms like Shipt and Instacart.

“The phone is my lifeline. Missing an order could mean losing income,” she stressed, underscoring the intensity of her work routine.

Last year, Melvin garnered approximately $50,000 before taxes from her gig work, a notable decline from her previous income. She anticipates her earnings could climb to around $75,000 annually if she secures a position as a 911 dispatcher, a career path she is currently pursuing amid her strenuous gig schedule.

Despite owning a three-bedroom home with monthly expenses totaling $2,900, Melvin characterizes her financial situation as precarious, fraught with concerns about unforeseen costs and the enduring strain of economic instability.

“I might sound stable, but there are many worries weighing on me. If one thing goes awry, it can set off a chain reaction,” she lamented, emphasizing her self-sufficiency without reliance on food stamps.

Medical needs and essential home repairs frequently take a backseat due to financial constraints, compelling Melvin to personally mend her fence after it suffered damage from multiple tropical storms and hurricanes. With no health insurance, she has foregone visits to doctors and dentists for an extended period, underscoring the sacrifices she makes to make ends meet.

This year marks the first instance Melvin has deferred payment of her federal taxes, a decision driven by her prioritization of mortgage obligations over other fiscal responsibilities.

Through adversity, Melvin has fostered connections with her clientele, many of whom value her dependability and warmth. However, she admits to grappling with disappointment over inconsistent tips, which significantly impact her earnings.

“It’s disheartening to deliver to an affluent home and receive no tip. I keep a record of those addresses,” she revealed, reflecting on the emotional toll of relying on gratuities.

Despite the taxing nature of her schedule, Melvin remains optimistic about transitioning to a salaried role as a 911 dispatcher, envisioning stability and benefits currently absent from her life. Her perseverance through multiple job rejections underscores her conviction in the prevalence of age discrimination in employment practices.

Looking forward, Melvin aims to strike a balance between her dispatcher job and continuing to serve her loyal clients. While acknowledging the personal strain and limited leisure time, she recently indulged in her first vacation in five years—a cruise funded through careful savings and a crucial need for rejuvenation.

“Previously, I enjoyed traveling and a more carefree life,” she reminisced. “Now, I find solace in glimpses of others’ experiences on Instagram.”

Melvin’s journey epitomizes the resilience and challenges encountered by many navigating the gig economy amid broader economic shifts, illustrating the intricate realities of maintaining financial stability and personal well-being in times of uncertainty.
