Man with gun in backpack arrested near Republican National Convention

A man was arrested near the security zone of the Republican National Convention on Monday after police discovered he was concealing a firearm in a "tactical" backpack, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. The arrest occurred around 1 p.m. on the 1200 block of North 11th Street, approximately two blocks from the vehicle screening perimeter set up for the convention, which commenced on the same day.

The Milwaukee Police Department stated that the 21-year-old man, whose identity had not been released as of Tuesday night, did not possess a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Law enforcement officials, including U.S. Capitol Police, noticed the man acting suspiciously. He was observed wearing a ski mask and carrying a large tactical backpack, prompting the authorities to conduct a "subject stop."

"Police initially observed the suspect looking suspicious, wearing a ski mask and a large tactical backpack in the street," the Milwaukee Police Department's statement read. The U.S. Capitol Police carried out the stop, but when asked for details about the arrest, they referred inquiries back to the Milwaukee authorities. Similarly, a Milwaukee County spokesperson directed questions to the police department.

The specifics of the firearm involved were not disclosed. When questioned about the type of gun, a police spokesperson indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that they could not provide further details at that time. "This is an ongoing investigation. This is the information available at this time," the spokesperson said. Local prosecutors were reviewing the case.

The arrest occurred just two days after former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Trump reported that his ear was grazed by a bullet during the incident.

In a related security incident on Tuesday, police from Columbus, Ohio, who were in Milwaukee to assist with convention security, shot a man they claimed was wielding two knives and advancing towards another man during an argument. This incident took place about a mile from the convention's venues, further highlighting the heightened security measures and tensions surrounding the event.

The Republican National Convention has been under significant security scrutiny, with numerous law enforcement agencies collaborating to ensure the safety of attendees and participants. The convention, which started on Monday, is a high-profile event drawing national attention, particularly given the recent assassination attempt on Trump and the presence of prominent political figures.

The Milwaukee Police Department and other law enforcement agencies have been on high alert, implementing extensive security protocols to prevent any incidents. The arrest on Monday and the subsequent incident on Tuesday underscore the challenges faced by security personnel in managing such a significant event.

As the convention continues, authorities are likely to maintain a strong presence and remain vigilant to prevent any further security breaches. The cooperation between local police, U.S. Capitol Police, and additional law enforcement from other regions highlights the extensive efforts to safeguard the convention and its attendees. The ongoing investigations into these incidents will continue to be closely monitored, with updates expected as more information becomes available.

The heightened security around the Republican National Convention illustrates the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating potential threats. This multi-agency approach underscores the importance of maintaining safety and order during such significant political events. The recent incidents have prompted a re-evaluation of security measures to ensure that attendees and participants can engage in the convention without fear of violence or disruption. The ongoing vigilance of the police and other security personnel is crucial in maintaining the integrity and safety of the event.
