Maserati driver who was cut off and shot at woman, D.C. bystanders is sentenced to 32 years

The driver of a Maserati who responded to being cut off by shooting at a woman’s car and then turning and firing at bystanders in Washington, D.C., was sentenced Monday to over 32 years in prison, prosecutors said.

Kenneth Miles Davis Jr., 45, was convicted for his actions on May 19, 2021, which included a road-rage shooting that resulted in a woman being struck in the arm. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia reported that the woman's 5-year-old and 11-year-old children were also in her car at the time of the incident.

A jury found Davis guilty in January of one count of assault with intent to kill while armed, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

His lawyer, Marnitta L. King, stated that Davis has already informed the court he will appeal the decision. “Mr. Davis will continue to fight to prove his innocence,” she said.

The violent encounter began around 5 p.m. when Davis, feeling he had been cut off in traffic, got out of his Maserati GranTurismo and shot into the woman’s car, officials said. Security video captured Davis getting out and shooting at the woman’s car as she attempted to drive away. He then turned and pointed his weapon at bystanders before stepping out of frame.

Davis fired 13 rounds in total — six at the woman’s car and seven at bystanders — according to the prosecutor’s office. Although no one besides the woman was shot, her 5-year-old child was injured by broken glass.

The woman whose car was targeted identified Davis from a police photo lineup, expressing her certainty by stating, “It was him” and “I’m positive, my heart is pounding,” as documented in a police arrest warrant affidavit.

In a letter to the judge submitted in May, Davis maintained his innocence and expressed his belief that he did not receive a fair trial.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the brazen nature of the attack and the danger it posed to the public. The lengthy sentence reflects the severity of Davis's actions and serves as a deterrent against similar acts of violence.

The incident underscores the serious consequences of road rage and the potential for such situations to escalate into life-threatening events. Authorities emphasize the importance of remaining calm and seeking non-violent solutions to conflicts on the road.

The sentence handed down to Davis aims to deliver justice for the victims and their families, providing some measure of closure for the traumatic experience they endured. The community response has been one of relief that a dangerous individual has been held accountable for his reckless and violent behavior.

As Davis appeals his conviction, the legal process will continue to be closely monitored. The case highlights the complexities of the judicial system and the ongoing efforts to ensure that justice is served fairly and effectively.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of road rage and the importance of conflict de-escalation. Public awareness and preventative measures are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with aggressive driving behaviors. The judicial system's response in this case underscores the commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law.
